A home free kick taken quickly found the visitors alert and Brocton unprepared as the kick was intercepted by Liam Hurst, who then had a clear path to goal and made no mistake. Against opposition from a higher division to concede as early as the fourth minute of the game was the last thing that Brocton needed.
However, the home team rallied and before the ten minute mark had drawn level. Jack Edwards gets in some great crosses on the run from the right flank but so often they are cut out at the near post. The wily Paul McMahon got there first and deftly diverted the powerful cross into goal.
Hurst came close to catching out Adam Jenkins, in Brocton’s goal, as he shot from distance, presumably seeing the keeper a little off his line. The shot was strong but hit the top of the bar and went over.
The visitors did not have to wait long to regain their lead though as the speedy Cosmas Watwasa on their right flank got to the bye line after a clever diagonal run onto a bread and butter ball towards the corner flag and he cut the ball back invitingly into the box. There, Shay Brennan met it with a simple side foot into goal. That was on the quarter hour. On the half hour Adam Robinson put the ball forward for Dan Lomas to flick on and Jack Edwards arrived to shoot. He was under pressure and that was enough to force the shot wide.
Kenny Devoir then came on for the injured Luke Wright and almost immediately the Badgers put together their best move of the match. Passing between Lomas, McMahon and Edwards resulted in the latter shooting at goal and keeper Denham Hinds able only to beat it straight out. He did better with the return shot though, dropping gratefully on to it.
The second half began with a bang as Brocton drew level. An Edwards cross in the air this time was met firmly by McMahon for his and the Badger’s second. It roused our visitors and only a great tackle in the box by Matt Holland prevented an immediate reply. But then a series of unfortunate mistakes let in Shepshed, not once, but twice gifting goals to Brennan and Michael Reeve and those, sandwiching a direct free kick from just outside the box from Alex Troke took the game away from the hosts. With the score at 5-2 down, a free kick converted by Shaan Stuart raised home spirits and brought it to 3-5 at the close.
