Paul McMahon grabs an equaliser for Brocton, but the game slips away
Not a classic as Leicester Road show how to win ugly.
Saturday 28th October
Leicester Road 2 Brocton 1
Brocton had the better of the early exchanges with first Alex Curtis on the left and later Jack Edwards on the right getting to the bye line and putting in tempting crosses. Curtis’ cross was just too high for Joel Powell and Edwards’ found the defender well placed to cut out.
In between, Anthony Juxon, as usual, along with Dan Lomas, central to much that was good about Brocton’s play through midfield, made a timely interception and chipped the defensive line. McMahon darted for it but home keeper Will Highland was first to react.
Just after the quarter hour the home side showed their pace down the right and Adam Jenkins was needed to make a save at his near post. Two minutes later a shot into the box could only be beaten out to Jenkins’ right where it was collected and returned. A block on the line by Shaan Stuart saved the day initially, but that too was returned and a timely poke forward from the speedy Nuno Gomes was enough to give the home side the lead.
Edwards continued to get some joy down the right flank but his crosses were met before they reached the danger area and it took a corner from the other flank to bring the Badgers back on terms. Adam Wood made the first headed contact but it was poacher Paul McMahon who stabbed the ball home.
There was one flowing move from the visitors that brought a glint of a chance and a corner which also looked threatening, but that was largely it for constructive football and as the game progressed into the second period it became more and more clear that, if the game was to be won, it would be from a mistake as neither side could create a clear opportunity.
The mistake came as the final whistle drew near and it was that man Gomes who pounced on to the loose ball and with Jenkins having advanced beyond the ball, there were cries for an off side decision that never came, Gomes was free to make the final touch after the ball was poked towards goal.
