A bitterly cold night warmed by a point
Jack Edwards bags a brace to get a draw with Paget rangers
Tuesday 27th February 2018
Brocton 2 Paget Rangers 2
This match could easily have been called off and without the fixture backlog which most clubs are now experiencing maybe it would have done. However, the ground staff worked hard and the referee decided that the pitch was playable so, despite the sub zero temperatures and a smattering of snow across the pitch giving the scene a Christmassy look, the game went ahead.
Both sets of players provided good moments in a well contested match with Brocton showing the flair in attack which deserted them on Saturday. When Jack Edwards clipped the ball inside the post midway into the first half, it was nothing less than the home side and Edwards in particular, deserved. He went on to find the outside of the post .
To that point, Paget’s attacks had foundered on Brocton’s deep midfield with Ben Douglas sitting in front of a solid back four and the pace of Hartshorne and Edwards kept Paget from venturing too far up field, although they did rely on a high line whenever possible in the attempt to catch Brocton’s breaks off side.
With the end of the half within their grasp, Paget put together their two best moves of that period. Daniel Carter finished off a fine slick passing move all the way into Brocton’s box with a cool finish. Then, with Brocton briefly floundering and the visitors lifted by their goal, Ross Dempster added to the home side’s problems with a well taken strike just as the half closed.
Brocton have been guilty of wilting at that point, but this side lifted themselves and proceeded to have some good chances. Joe Hartshorne had a shot brilliantly saved by Josh Benton, before Ross Clarke got into the box with only Benton to beat and found the keeper making himself big and preventing the goal.
Edwards came up trumps towards the end though when he took his run down the left into the box and this time, having twice before pulled the ball back and failed to find his fellow forwards, he drove at goal and struck home with his right foot. The final moments were Brocton’s with a strike against the post and another good save, but a point was well earned.
