Bromley U11’s were crowned Shield Champions this weekend after winning 4-1 against Petts Wood Magpies in a game that drew the biggest crowd of the weekend parade at the Meridian Ground, Charlton.

Manager Tony Sherlock and assistant manager Ted Hooper had their work cut out before kick-off after the news that influential centre back Elliot would play no part in the final due to injury. Captain Sidney S moved into defence, being partnered by Jack T, with JT and Ethan M occupying the full-back roles. The Magpies found the Bromley back four hard to breach throughout the game while at the other end, Bromley’s midfield generals Jack H and Jack E’s running power was a joy to watch. With the early introduction of James S, Bromley camped in their opponents half with attacking football. After a succession of corners by wingers Paddy M and Joshua T, Bromley scored twice in two minutes thanks to Jack E and striker Jamie K. Another few corners brought more chances for Bromley, with winger Josh hitting the post as the Magpies were unable to get a foot hold in the game. Bromley’s continual dominance was evident with the movement of striker Harry R pulling the opponent’s defence all over the field. When Jack H made it 3-0 it seemed there was no comeback for the Magpies, but it turned out to be the opposite with the goal bringing the opposition back to life. They started to make a game of it by winning tackles and pushing Bromley’s defence back, and they were rewarded with a goal that trickled over the line. From that moment, Bromley’s keeper Joseph W was the busier of the two goalkeepers.

When the second half commenced, Bromley started off the slower of the two teams, not being able to get their passing game together as their opponents kept plugging away in trying to get a second goal. No Nonsense tackling from JT and captain Sydney S was not going to allow the lead to slip. With the Magpies pushing for the elusive second goal, both goalkeepers were busy throughout a tense second half. Winger Joshua M scored the fourth and final goal of the final and polished off a great team performance with a celebration that was worth waiting for.

When the final whistle was blown, the heartache of last year’s beaten finalist was gone and a jubilant manager Tony said after the game that it was “a good squad performance. We are worthy winners after a difficult transition to 11-a-side, we were great today”.
