It was going to be a long arduous journey for the Broughton Babes. The bus left Edinburgh bright and early Sunday morning for a 1.00 kick off. Eventually the lengthy journey began with everyone in good spirits. After a strong showing of numbers last weekend for the home game against Madras there was a surprisingly small (but mighty) Broughton side aboard the bus. Only 14 girls were available to play, the girls were missing Captain Badger as she spent a week schussing down the slopes in France (even with a dodgy ankle!) Mad Dog Neill run into some trouble finding Oban so was sadly not available to kick some butt.
The long winding journey had its up and downs, the highlight definitely being the lovely bakery in Callander where most of the team treated themselves to tasty treats. Upon arrival in Oban the weather left much to be desired … as per usual. It was a rainy overcast day but nothing the Broughton gang hasn’t dealt with before. We live in Scotland after all.
Oban also had a struggle for numbers so the game to be played was 12 aside, which left Broughton with 2 subs. The teams dropped the back row in the scrum putting a few players out of position, especially Ciara who got chucked in at fullback and did an amazing job. Broughton started out storming with some great attacking. About 10 minutes into the match the teams scrummed down. Being a smaller pack the ball popped out of the scrum quickly and quick play by Captain Katie Croft got the ball away swiftly where it ended up in the hands of winger JLO (Joanne Logan) who ran it over the line to score the first try for Broughton. 0-5
Soon the Broughton Babes were at it again, after a penalty the ball was passed through the hands quickly. The girls saw space on the outside and went for it, Greer at 12 got the ball out to JLA (Joanne Laing) who scored for Bro. The centres showed great pace and hands in their team try. King made a great conversion and Broughton was up 0-12.
After a wayward kick the ball went off the pitch into a pile of thorny bushes. This fearless match reporter spent some time in the woods courageously untangling the ball, much later finding a thorny twig tucked down her jeans. I do it for you Broughton Beauties!
The rollercoaster ride was about to begin, as Oban was to prove a fiery side after answering Broughton’s two quick tries with two of their own. Despite great pressure and some great tackles by second rows Katie and Jenn, Oban broke through the Broughton defense and scored two speedy tries and a conversion tying the game 12 all. Broughton’s heads went down briefly; especially when Ciara made a tackle, Jenn went in to clear out and they smashed heads. We heard the clunk on the sidelines and both players were left in a daze. Ciara came off the pitch with a bloody head wound, quickly patched up by Matt (our one fan) who wrapped tape around her head and she went back to play looking like a hardcore ninja. Oban squeaked ahead with yet another try even after a big hit from Laing. 17-12 to Oban.
The half-time pep talk needed to be inspirational to get Broughton back on track. After some great words from the coaches and Captain Croft the girls knew what they needed to do. The Broughton Beauties channeled absent Captain Badger and came out fighting. Winger Joanne Logan kicked the ball into space… Broughton was awarded a penalty and Kingy took a quick tap and go and got the ball out to winger Super Stacey Smith who scored and the game was once again tied 17 all. Broughton was back!
Coombsy was once again a force on the pitch making some big hits. The girls showed great character and strength in coming back strong after being down at half time. Kinghorn spent her fair share of time lying down on the ground, clearly giving the girls time to catch their breath. Back in action, Oban dropped the ball and it became a football match as Greer kicked it towards the try line, gave it another wee kick and the race was on to see which team would jump on it first. Speedy Greerster showing her usual strength and determination got their first, jumped on it and it was another try for Bro. Kicking Kinghorn converted it and the score was 17-24 for Bro.
Broughton continued to show great spirit and teamwork. Becz made some great tackles and strong runs. Her Irish chum Ciara had a great run which gained Broughton massive territory. Getting the ball to the backs and the strong centre duo of Laing and Greer proved to be a great pairing as Megan had a great run and a great pass to JLA. After a quick pick and go from talented flyhalf Kinghorn ,the speedster crossed the line and scored the try and yet another conversion for Broughton. 17-31
Oban was not about to go down without a fight and crashed through the Bro defense to attempt a try but the ball was held up. The rollercoaster ride wasn’t over yet with Oban answering back with another try and conversion making the score 24-31 with time running out. The last penalty of the game gave Kinghorn the opportunity for a penalty kick right in front of the posts. Kingy proved her skill and her man of the match worthiness after a successful kick! The game was over with a final score of 24-34 in favour of the mighty Broughton Babes!
After a long stressful match, which proved to rapidly age Coaches Gibson and Breidenhann, the team went and celebrated their victory. Sources say Marius may have needed a strong whisky and a chaser after the nerve-racking match. Well done to Becz and King who both won Man of the Match and had to down not a pint but bottles of Stella and Alcopop. The Broughton Beauties reign victorious once again and look forward to their rematch against Oban at home on 11th March. With a full squad and a home team advantage the team looks forward to really smashing the Oban side! (Also looking forward to winning the league and never having to ride the bus to Oban ever again ☺!)
