Broughton Rugby Football Club Ballantynes Sevens 12th April 2014 report from Jingles

As spring sunshine peppered Wardie and heralded a day of sparkling rugby up and down the country. Ten teams from the east regional leagues gathered to compete for the cup, shield and bowl trophies and entertain the crowd of supporters.

Early games proved very competitive with Broughton and Inverleith (pool 1) playing a wide expansive style and Trinity Accies and Liberton from pool 2 playing a direct and hard running style.

As the competition progressed the result of the pool ties between these teams would prove crucial with Broughton coming through in the second half against Inverleith and Liberton running out winners through three tries against Trinity Accies.

This set up a mouth watering finals line up with Broughton playing Liberton in the cup final, Trinity Accies playing Inverleith in the Shield and Queensferry playing Edinburgh Northern.

In a tight bowl final Queensferry emerged winners 14 – 7 and in the Shield final Trinity Accies hit top form with a 42-0 win over Inverleith.

The cup final was an absorbing affair between two contrasting sevens styles with Liberton playing down the slope in the first half and taking an early lead scoring the first try. Both teams exchanged tries with Broughton converting theirs and keeping them in touch 15 – 14 down at half time.

Broughton took more control in the second half, keeping possession and stretching Libeton which producing a try and a penalty to secure the Cup for the hosts 24 – 15.

All trophies were presented by Rory Ballantyne who also played for Broughton.
