Tries from Hagen, Wishart, Smith and Jones see Broughton leapfrog opponents into second place after tense Wardie win.

Broughton Men's Head Coach Stuart Thomson praised his side's dogged determination and defensive

After a morning of incessant rain, the Wardie slope was still playable as 2nd v 3rd locked horns for the first time this season.

The seasiders came to the North of the city boosted by their win over Trinity the previous week whilst Broughton went into the game with the added incentive of leapfrogging their opponents if they were to win.

Broughton got off to a great start with two early tries. Stuart Hagen was first to breach the Porty whitewash after some excellent phase play then Craig Wishart was the beneficiary following a dynamic driving lineout.

As was to be expected, Portobello hit back with a penalty to reduce the deficit to 10-3 then Dan Smith scored before the break after a deft chip through from Hagen. The moustached-one unfortunately unable to added the extras on each ocassion.

HT: Broughton 15-3 Portobello

After the quick turnaround, Broughton earned what could turn out to be an invaluable bonus point come the business end of the campaign. Casper Jones was fortunate to see a kindly bounce of the egg fall into his path from a Hagen punt to race in for the fourth try of the afternoon.

Porty then came back into the game and scored two quick tries of their own. One of which was as a result of the hosts being numerically disadvantaged due to the sin-binning of Craig Wishart.

To coin a soccer phrase, it was 'squeak bum time' for Thomson's team with a dogged backs to the wall defensive effort to hold on to what was now a precarious lead.

Fortune however favoured the brave and everyone on the home touchline was very relieved to hear the final whistle.

Speaking after the game, a pleased Thomson said, "It was no surprise that today's game went to the wire and was so close at the end. Our last three games against Porty have now been decided by 2, 2 & 3 points! There's hardly a beer mat's width between two sides who enjoy playing expansive rugby.

"Whilst it was a nervy climax to the game, I am obviously delighted with another win and happy to secured the bonus point win particularly with the depleted squad we had today.

"I'm sure the boys will chuffed to keep their unbeaten run intact however we haven't won anything yet. It's back on the training paddock on Tuesday night as we prepare for what promises to be a tough game on the road next week at Earlston."
