Broughton Rugby Men & Women are set to celebrate 90 years of rugby in North Edinburgh this weekend when they entertain RDVC & Ayr Ladies respectively.

On the 11th October 1924, Broughton FP RFC played their first ever game and it is perhaps fitting that both sides celebrate another milestone in the club’s history at the Club’s home ground of Wardie Playing Fields.

Doug McClure’s side look to extend their unbeaten record against the Students who sit at the bottom of the table looking for their first win of the campaign.

Speaking ahead of this historic game, the Head Coach offered caution against complacency ahead of Saturday East 3 clash with the Students, “Every game is going to be a tough game in this league. Dick Vet are always full of big, solid and skilful rugby players and I expect nothing different this time round either.

“I’m not reading anything in to league positions and I safely predict they will win games this season – but we’ll be ready to ensure it doesn’t start with us this weekend!

It’s been a hat-trick of wins so far for the East 3 league leaders who have nearly amassed 50% of last season’s points total already. The key to this early success, according to McClure is two-fold. “This season we’ve looked to develop an expansive, open game of rugby that we can take to any ground in the league we want to. Also, there’s a great buzz about the Clubhouse at the moment and it’s been built by a group of guys who are out to train and play for each other with a strong desire to win.”

The Club is also inviting all ex-players and members to attend for a historic photograph to commemorate the occasion prior to the game at 13.30h. The match kicks-off at 3pm.

On Sunday, the Women will look to continue the weekend of celebrations when they welcome Ayr Ladies to Wardie in a re-run of last season’s Bowl Final. Broughton lifted the silverware with a 17-7 victory on the day and Coach Louise Forsyth is keen to replicate that success, boosted by last Sunday’s 8 try win on the road at Morgan.

Forsyth noted, “We were actually struggling at the beginning of last week to pull together a side however such is the determination to play rugby, many of the girls managed to swap shifts at work and move other commitments to travel to Dundee in a search for that elusive first win of the season.

“Every single person in the squad backed themselves, believed in each other and it came together to record a 44-5 victory – our biggest winning margin against Morgan and our first win in Dundee since September 2012.”

Sunday’s visitors got off to a winning start to their second season in league competition, with a hat-trick of victories after moving up from Division 2.

Last week they fell to their first loss of the season, 61-7 to Cartha QP in Glasgow however Forsyth is confident her side can overturn any bounceback the pink and blacks will be looking to gain at Wardie.

Forsyth added, “It’s certainly going to be another tight contest. I’m not underestimating Ayr in the slightest after seeing their early season results but I think after last weekend’s emphatic win, there’s newfound belief and confidence within our team and I believe we’ll carry that into Sunday’s game and continue where we left off in Dundee.”

The match kicks-off at 2pm.
