40 better than 30
On a weekend which saw the 1st XV maintain their fight for survival, the Junior colts showed the future for park is extremely bright with a 45-10 win against Ormskirk junior colts in the semi-final of the Raging Bull colts cup.
The game kicked off with Park playing towards the scoreboard. The early exchanges were pretty even with both sides gaining territory through an effective kick chase. However it was park who were the first on the score board when from the scrum Looby hit Jack up on a hard line who then drew 2 tacklers and with a sublime offload found Butty coming like an exorcism to deliver the first of a personal 5 try haul. Looby converted 7-0 Park.
The next passage of play saw Ormskirk coming back into the game with some determined runs by there second row. But the park defence stood firm and managed to repel all Ormskirk advances. Park then started to camp in the Ormskirk 22 and after almost scoring Adam Cheetham crashed over with a trademark show and go. 12-0 Park.
Midway through the 1st half park were in total control with Ormskirk’s scramble defence the only thing keeping them in the game. After a period of sustained pressure the park backline sprung into action with every park back involved in a sweeping attack finished off by Butty in the corner. 17-0 Park.
Then came back Ormskirk with some determined running and a good kick chase they managed to get field position and eventually Park infringed and their No. 10 decided to have a shot at goal. With the ball sailing wide of the right hand post the ball was fielded in the in goal area and then park decided to do ala Jake Smith and run the ball out from their own in goal. Park were ultimately turned over for an easy Ormskirk try. Conversion Successful. 17- 7
Half Time
Ormskirk came out of the blocks firing in the second half and it wasn’t long before they were on the scoreboard again through a penalty from their No. 10. 17-10 – Squeaky bum time…..
……..Not at all this park side showed real maturity by going back to the game plan which had worked so effectively in the first half. Hard running forwards with a real tenacity at the break down to enable Ben to release the exciting backline.
It wasn’t long before Park were back on the score sheet with a turnover in the middle of the pitch the ball was moved through several pairs of hands before finding that man again butty on the loop to under the sticks. Looby converted. 24-10 park.
Park started to really turn the screw now. After many phases of play around the Ormskirk 22 lubes put a delightful grubber kick in for Butty to chase. The ball bounced delicately into his hands for him to go over for his 4th. Looby converted. 31-10 park.
By now the Ormskirk heads were beginning to drop. With Park having all the territory and with a tenacious defence a turnover lead to Butty racing away to score his 5th of the afternoon. Looby converted. 38 – 10 Park.
By now there was only 5 minutes to go and the game was firmly in the bag for Park. But JR wanted more. Explaining to onlookers how 40 is better than 30. Then in the last play of the game the ball was moved wide to Jack to step a couple of would be tacklers and then put on the afterburners to score under the posts. Looms converted (Looby had cramp). 45-10 Park.
Park now move onto the Final on the 29th April against Tarleton or Lymm being played at Sandbach RFC
The Junior Colts are now into the final of Both Raging Bull & Lancashire Cup (for the second successive season).
