It was always going to be a difficult game at Carrington who are 4th in the league and had been on a good run recently scoring a high number of points. We arrived at the ground having parked at the pub and then walked across the road to the pitch which was in very good condition.. Thirteen of us waited for kick off and the other two players to arrive. The bad news was James Durkan did not appear but Yonner did. It was a wonderful sight watching him get changed at the side of the pitch in his black Y Fronts, one that would put people off for life but at least he was ready as we kicked off.

We started well stretching Carrington but they tackled well and kept us out. Then another blow Barts’ hamstring strain recurred. In fairness he stayed on the pitch to help us out at lineouts and scrums but could do nothing more. So thanks to Barts for his contribution and staying on the pitch.

Carrington seemed to have weathered our start and they attacked us while we tried to reorganise ourselves. It was only two desperate last ditch tackles from Jack, yes he’s back, one of our last season’s heroes playing on the wing and Jamie Lynch playing at full back who has not played for us since our win at Oldham early in the season. Eventually we got upfield and from a turnover ball in their 22 we moved the ball left with a fine pass from Kegs to put Joe Noone in for his first try. In fact it was also Joe’s first game since the Oldham game as well. 0-7. Five minutes later a pop pass from KOB to Kegs saw him find a gap in their backline and then go round the full back to score. 0-14. We then had to withstand some pressure from Carrington and then just before half-time their centre found a gap from broken play to score under the posts. 7-14.

At half-time we awaited Shack with his hot Ribena but he did not turn up. He apparently is injured, a broken finger or something like that. Poor excuse really. Early in the second half we came close to scoring tries but Carrington continued to tackle and kept us out. Eventually our pack started getting on top with our props Leo and Steve getting the better of the opposition and our new hooker for the day the returning Tom Reed enjoying life in the middle. Leo had now taken over from Tim as the line out thrower and Dave Goley as our main jumper things were getting settled.

Midway through the half Carrington kicked deep into Jamie Lynch’s hands who ran back to half way and as he was tackled got the ball away to Mike Bentham to KOB to Kegs who ran fifty metres and with the full back to beat had Joe Noone on his inside and with a delicate lob pass found Joe to score. 7-21. Five minutes later Joe was caught in two minds when all he had to do was draw the full back and feed Jack to score instead he was tackled and knocked the ball on. Not to let it effect him from the resulting scrum Carrington srtruck the ball but it flew out between the back rows feet. Joe was onto it in a flash and with a good pick up held off two tackles to score his hat-trick. The conversion hit the post. 7-26.

We then missed another try when Ben OB made a break ran 50 metres and with the full back to beat passed to his left to who he thought was Jack instead it was their winger who took it thankfully and cleared. Then when Carrington broke out of their 22 they got as far as out hafway line. Good defence stopped them and with the ball out and the scrum half arriving late Burglar Bill stepped over the ruck took the ball one hand off and he was away to score. 7-33. The with minutes left Leo went on a charge from ten metres out and got over the line to score but by the time the ref got their one of their players put his hand under the ball so the try was not given. You could hear Leo crying as it would have been his first try this season and on the day he probably deserved it. But it was not to be. So the game finished 7-33. Considering out player shortage and injury it was a good performance against a Carrington team who never stopped trying and tacked all afternoon.

Back to the pub then to listen to an educational discussion between Leo and Bill. The future of the country is in good hands!! More crying from Leo when Bill came back with his chips and three sausages because Leo only got one. We then had an insight into what Bill was expecting that evening. His girlfriend Lucy or Lucky in his case was cooking him a meal. Spag Bol is Bill’s favourite but Lucky was going to cook him VENISON (posh or what).

Later that evening I had a call from Franco who wanted to know the score and asked me to inform the lads his hamstring is improving. James Ellis who had been promoted to the 4’s asked for the result as did Shack. I also received a text from Rob H (remember him?). He said he had not had a mention for a while and also that he is coming to Manchester this weekend. He said he would buy us all a beer due to our results so far this season. I was pleased to inform him with the league games and 3 cup games and 3 friendlies we have now scored over 1000 points. Anyway I am off to the library, know what I mean!!!
