A BRIEF HISTORY OF BROXBOURNE BOROUGH F.C.

Formed in 1959, Somersett Football Club, originated from ex-pupils of Chase Boys School, in Enfield. They joined the Edmonton Youth Saturday League and for the first two seasons propped up the league unable to win a single fixture.

In 1961 the club applied for and was accepted into the reputed Enfield Alliance Football League. Somersett's dismal lack of success continued and again they waved to the rest of the clubs from the bottom of the division. The club in successive seasons progressed to the premier league winning many cup competitions although never winning the premiership title. In 1975 Somersett were invited to join the V & E Youth Club Centre at their present site in Goffs Lane, Cheshunt. An ambitious youth policy was quickly established which was later enhanced in 1982 when Cheshunt Rangers FC merged with the club to form, what is now the back-bone of the current side although there was one further major change to come.

Because of the growing connections and emphasis on youth within the Cheshunt area, the Club decided in 1989, after almost 20 years in the Enfield Alliance League, to join the McMullens League. In their first season they won the Division 3 title and the League Cup. They were promptly promoted to Division 1 and became champions in that season 1984/5. Somersett also achieved great success in the County Cup, reaching the final. Despite their quick rise into the Premier Division they established themselves as a forceful premier league side.

In 1991, Ambury FC, a premier division team from the Sunday Brooke Waltham League, joined forces with Somersett to become Somersett Ambury V & E FC, then known locally as SAVE FC. In 1993 the club joined the Herts. Senior League as a division one team. Within two seasons they won promotion to the premier league. After finishing as "runners-up' in the Herts. Senior premier league in1997/8 the Club applied for and was accepted into the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. This was by far the clubs most ambitious challenge and one the club board members and players looked forward to.

1998/99 season saw the club coming of age as we gained Senior status in the Spartan South Midlands League. It was an eye opener, playing competitive games twice a week with a small squad soon proved an uphill task.. With the summer of 2000 came improvements to the pitch and clubhouse. It also saw the arrival of Andy Leese as manager who transformed the first team into a good premier league side. One of the highlights was a visit in the FA Cup to Canvey Island. The season finished on a high winning the Roy Bailey Cup.

Several seasons passed with little success then in the closed season of 2004 Peter THEO arrived from Royston Town - he not only became Manager of the first team but also through the setting up of a new company took over the running of the club. His direction in the first twelve months led to a transformation of the clubhouse and pitch with seating for 150 people and a new stand completed in Autumn 2005. We also changed the name of the club to Broxbourne Borough F.C. On the field Peter produced a team that reached 9th in the league table and but for a poor run over the Christmas and New Year could have achieved a top three position. Season 2005/06 brought further success in the FA Vase reaching the last 16 after beating highly fancied Maidstone United. Our league position at Christmas was very challenging being in the top six - we were looking to progress even higher but again a bad slump followed and we ended mid table. We were however awarded best pitch in the league which was just reward to our groundsman Mickey Darling who has worked tirelessly to improve the surface.

2007/08 season was our most successful. Despite Peter THEO being away throughout, Tony Faulkner made a superb replacement getting the best out of a talented side. Our eighth place and run in two cup league cup competitions and Charity Shield gave all Boro supporters a great deal of satisfaction.

The next season started with the departure of Peter Theo and his company. The change coming in late July meant a frantic start to the 2007/08 season however the Committee felt comfortable with the new company run by said Committee. Despite all the re-organisation Tony Faulkner and the lads yet again astounded us with their play. They finished twelfth in the league and that with a ten-point deduction!! The reserves also surpassed themselves winning the 2nd Division Reserve league at the first attempted. Much praise must go to their manager Mark BEELS. The new season gives us a lot to look forward to with an improved squad and new Reserve team manager Dave TRIPP. Good luck to all the players this season.

Season 2008/9 turned out to be our best season in senior football. Under the guidance of manager Tony Faulkner and his staff we finished a creditable 4th in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division and won our 1st Senior cup when we defeated Royston Town in the Herts Charity Cup at Letchworth. In the FA Cup we went out after a replay to Dulwich Hamlet and in the FA Vase we lost away to Tiptree Utd. Season 2009/10 saw us dropping our Reserve team and welcoming Enfield 1893 FC to groundshare with us. Tony Faulkner started the campaign but left in November when he was given the opportunity to manage Ware FC in the Ryman North. We did not have too far to look for a replacement in our old Reserve Team manager Mark Beels who welcomed the chance to prove himself at this level. This he did with aplomb taking us to three cup finals and winning one of them.

Mark Beels, during the close season worked tirelessly with his staff of Kevin Wakely, Reg Kemble and Tom Mundt started the 2010/11 campaign with a preseason local tournament win which gave the signs that all would be well but with a series of defeats, by October Mark resigned and the mantle was taken up by Tom Mundt. He immediately brought in Ashley Fisk from Potters Bar who instantly began transforming the side bringing in experienced Ryman players. There were many successes but it was quickly realised that this would be a season of transition, however we finished a creditable 10th in the League. In February Ash Fisk took over as Manager with Tom Mundt moving to Director of Football.

With still further changes in the close season and a preseason football campaign to die for yet again we enter a new season full of optimism and yes Season 2011/12 could be our best yet
