A brilliant afternoon of rugby for the u15's Cygnets seeing off a strong Reading team packed with County players to secure their place in the semi-final of the cup.
Both sides were full of strong runners which gave the game a great ebb and flow and meant that strong tackling was a must. Buckingham enjoyed the majority of the early possession and territory, and should have been 3 tries to the good by the time Reading levelled the game midway through the first half, with handling errors proving costly. The remainder of the half was very even between 2 committed teams showing great skills with and without the ball and a half time score of 10-10 was about right with Naadirah and Abi scoring for the home side.
The Buckingham supporters steadied themselves for a nervy 2nd half which started as the 1st had finished with the game flowing from one end to another. The deadlock was broken when Tami burst through to score with a typical show of pace and power but Reading showed no sign of caving in despite carrying several injured players. The Cygnets were also up for the fight though and continued to defend as team with some great tackling from forwards and backs alike as Reading looked to get back in the match. Eventually, the home side’s extra power and strength in depth began to tell as Reading ran out of steam and the visitors could do nothing about the pace of Tami and Naadirah who ran in 3 tries in the last 10 minutes.
The final score of 36-10 slightly flattered the Cygnets but they certainly deserved the victory and go into the semi-final with great confidence. They face either rivals Harpenden or unknown Hitchin in the next fixture which should be another great game, and will surely put the loyal supporters and coaches through the mill once again!
