Swanage and Wareham 23 Buckingham 17
For third time of trying Buckingham finallymade it into rural Dorset to take on fellow strugglers Swanage and Wareham needing to beat them to keep their slim hopes of avoiding relegation alive.But although outscoring their hosts by three tries to one, their awful record in the penalty count, seventeen this time out, enabled Swanage to win with a try and six penalties.
The home side were awarded two penalties within the first minute to take an early three point lead and set the tone of what was to follow, but from Buckinghams first sustained attack a break by Tom Amos enabled the outstanding Phil Wright to score the first of his three tries on the ten minute mark.
Back came Swanage as Buckingham conceded four penalties in quick succession to go 9-5 behind before the end of the first quarter.
Even at this stage it was obvious that Buckinghams threequarters were more than a match for their opposition, as time and time again scrum-half Andy Turvey got them moving, with James Bernard and Andrew Jackson carving through the Swanage midfield, but at the breakdown Buckinghams woes continued.
With ten minutes of the half left the visitors number seven was sent to the sinbin and from their eleventh penalty Swanage went further ahead at 12-5,scant reward for Buckingham after their excellent defence had nullified all of Swanages atacking options.
Things got even worse when minutes before the change round Swanage forced their way over to give themselves hope at 17-5 and Buckingham withit all to do.
Buckingham started the second half in determined fashion ignoring another penalty for not releasing, you sensed that they ment business and the ball went through nine phases before Wright forced his way over, Andy Whites conversion putting Buckingham back in touch with less than ten minutes played Had the revival started?
Sadlly the reverse happened and Swanage got into the Buckingham twenty-two and kicked two more penalties in the space of five minutes.as the visitors continued to committ basic errors.
Buckingham came back strongly from this latest setback, but unforced errors let the home side off the hook on several occasions
Another sweeping move by the backs took play well into Swanage territory followed by excellent ball retention in the forwards enabling Wright to score his third try ,time for more with over ten minutes left
Buckingham continued to batter the Swanage line but again gave away two more penalties at crucial moments before the final whistle brought the realisation that a very winnable game had slipped through their fingers.
