Bowdon 2s 30 Burnage 3s 15

by Geraint Morris

No Fijians, no nasty blokes from Yorkshire and they still beat us!

Burnage 3s travelled to Bowdon on Saturday looking to make up for the disappointment of the loss last week to Warrington. A number of regular players were unavailable. The Uni students were proclaiming upcoming deadlines and the McCumskey brothers had declared themselves unfit.

Adi Sullivan was back and we brought in the brothers Barrett, Merrick Junior and Luke Merril from the colts. John Todd (known quantity, safe pair of hands) and Dan (unknown quantiy) were brought in form the 4s. Dan’s opening gambit went something like this “You know when you wake up and you’re not really hungover but probably still drunk” securing his place on the bench.

Bowdon had the stronger pack and this showed in both the scrum and the line out. Burnage manages to secure their own scrum ball but we were going backwards against a bigger pack. The McKinlay/ Smith jumping operation, usually so effective, wasn’t 100% and we failed to secure enough ball to feed the backs.

In the first half Bowdon crossed the line and converted the try and added 2 penalties. Burnage had 3 shots at goal with the wind behind but things just weren’t going right and we went into the second half 13 – 0 down and about to play into a strong wind.

Changes were made at half time, Big Tom Canham came on to bolster the scrum and take quick free kicks. Adi Sullivan came in at 9 and proved his worth by marshalling the forwards.

Burnage soon crossed the line as we made a break on the short side. 9-10-Merrick Junior and he was round the defence and away. He chose not to use the waiting Barrett and grounded the ball on the left. JC added the extras. Why didn’t he kick first half?!

Bowdon had some strong forward runners and our tackling let us down. Bowdon started to move the score line out of our reach and we spent a frustrating last 20 minutes chasing a score line that was probably out of our reach. Both teams scored again but it ended up a fairly safe win for the home team.

We enjoyed the changing facilities up until Merrick Senior starting messing around with the mixer taps and the after match food (beef stew with thinly sliced potatoes on top) was given a 5/10 by our culinary expert. I can see why Freddie Wilson (he of the gravy debate) chose to stay at home with the 4s.

Man of the match goes to Josh Merrick. Just to annoy his Dad really.

Even though we lost we had a Jugathon and went to Didsbury. Next weekend is now free as Birkenhead Park conceded their fourth game of the season on Saturday. They had heard Maddock was keen to avenge his stamped on head. Next game is Marple at home on the 24th March.
