Wendover Juniors v BJFC Lynx Blues
After last week’s disappointing result, it was obvious from the start that the boys were desperate to gain maximum points from this game. So with a slight slope in their favour, Burnham set about their task with relish.
From the off, the midfield of Galad, Alfie and Luca were the controlling factor, and together with Joe and Charlie C. on either flank, there were soon all sorts of problems for the home team. Lee and Rhys up front were making great runs into space off the ball, and with possession being nine tenths of the law, surely a goal would soon arrive for the Blues.
It arrived when Galad made one of his searing runs through the middle, and the ball arrived dutifully at Lee’s feet. He dispatched it with an unerring shot into the Wendover net via the keeper’s body.
1-nil to the Blues, and all seemed well.
But Wendover, newly promoted this season, dutifully stepped up to the plate, and won a series of corners, any one of which could easily have been forced home. But Burnham held their nerve, and with the whole team battling well, and Blake, Toby and Mitchell handling all that the spirited opposition could throw at them, they went in at half time 1 up.
The second half kicked off with Tom and Firaz starting to add their skills and vision, and with Charlie S. up front, Burnham re-established their hold on the game. Tom especially, on his debut, looked the part, being strong in tackle and ‘Royal Mail’ like in distribution.
But it was the wide men who were now causing problems for the home team, and when Joe glided past 3 players to the by-line, and sent a brilliant ball across the six-yard box, Charlie C. was there to add to his record of scoring in every game this season.
Burnham were well on top now. Rhys was playing a captains role in giving 110% and creating havoc in the Wendover defence with his trademark runs, and Joe continued to torment his markers with strong runs, pace and skill. But with a combination of good saves from the Wendover keeper, and slightly wayward shots, the score remained at 2-0.
Wendover had their chances, but they were few and far between, and with Henry looking secure in goal, and Blake, Toby and Mitchell showing good anticipation, strength and pace, there was never any real threat to the Blues goal.
Indeed, with a final flourish Burnham could have extended their lead at the final whistle when Tom, on his own on the edge of the box, showed great technique in volleying a cross from the right, only to see his effort run just wide.
So overall, a good performance, with everybody showing commitment and a willingness to support everybody else. This should bode well for the rest of the season. Well done The Blues!
