Burnley 25 Preston Grasshoppers 25

From peak to trough

It was real hardcore rugby at Holden Rd this Saturday proper rugby, dodging showers ,a pitch with no markings washed out by days of torrential rain , a basic fifteen and playing the cosmopolitan bunch of Preston Grasshoppers 5ths but what a game.Played in front of a fluctuating crowd depending on the intensity of the rain skipper Craig Wiseman out through injury had assembled as rum a bunch of players as you could find .For forty minutes Burnley were fantastic or had Hoppers been toying with the locals waiting to unleash their four superstar subs after carefully weighing up Burnleys strengths which were plentiful. All this flowery speech is to cover up my first half notes which disintegrated in the showers. What I do recall is Burnley built a 22-0 lead with some fantastic rugby.Ben Peverley had a great game and it was great to see Eddie Blake back after two years with his customary no nonsense approach .Mick Uren sporting a tan from his summer jaunts and Danny Marshall added a touch of class as well as raising the teams age profile.Ian Coates ran some nifty angles and Celyn Lennard oozed class at full back .Dinger was Dinger and Joe Parkinson showed why he was on the Lions radar with a wonderfully crafted exhibition of how to play fly half.We even had a sub when Jackson Linford woke up but showed he was no slouch with an excellent performance. It was the most enjoyable half I had seen at Holden Rd in years.HT 22-0 and then the second half started ..Hoppers brought on their fitter ,faster better subs and Burnleys pre season training camp to the Park View Chippy was shown up to be inadequate preparation for this level of rugby .Get training lads! The pens started going Hoppers way and a good cross kick caught Burnley out.Dinger decided to have a breather in the bin and Preston took advantage as it was their turn to play some excellent rugby as they scored two more tries.Hoppers smelt blood and even added an outrageous drop goal to increase Burnleys anxieties. However as those of an Irish Catholic background know their is a god and the miracle in the rain duly happened. With ten minutes to go Smudge appeared from behind a rainbow and was pressed into action straightaway or once his dog could be controlled.Burnley started to go forward again and a Preston player deliberately knocked down a pass as Burnley looked to go clean through.Up stepped man of the match Parky to slot a penalty over from thirty metres out. That should have been it but with Burnley going forward a silly handling in the ruck gave Hoppers a pen near the 10 metre line. All credit to them they tapped and then kicked spotting space where the Burnley winger had come in to see what was going on.A perfect kick ,a good bounce and in the corner they went.Luckily for Burnley the kick was as predictable as a North Korean missile test and sailed somewhere towards St Johns school.FT 25-25 an excellent game of rugby played in good spirit between the Hillbillies and the flat earth ears excellenty reffed by Pete Keers
