The Manager talks to Phil Kirkbride of the Ormskirk Advertiser.

DEREK GOULDING has urged Burscough to go for the kill next season in order to put themselves in the play-off mix.

The Linnets finished 11th in the Evo-Stik First Division North as they regrouped following relegation last year.

Goulding says their main aim was to shake off the losing habit they picked up in a year they finished bottom of the Premier Division with just 26 points.

Burscough arrested that slump and picked up 14 wins and seventeen draws from their 42 league games.

Now Goulding has challenged his players to build on this season and have the confidence to go on the attack games to put themselves in the frame for promotion.

“The main objective we had for this season was to not lose as many as we did last season,” he said.

“It is pretty horrible once you are in that rut but we have managed to turn it around.

“We now need to start turning draws into wins but there are a lot of positives to take.

“There have been games this season where we have deserved a little bit better. A few of the draws have been wins snatched away from us.

“So next season is about game management for us because we have lost points from winning positions in the final few minutes.

“But hopefully we can take from this season and go into the final 10 minutes of games next season looking to push on for the win rather than just looking to avoid getting beat.

“Sometimes games have fizzled out because we didn’t want to lose.

“But that is behind us now and we can build on it for next season and the lads can have the confidence and mentality to go and win more games.”

Goulding has already stated he will look to find a replacement for striker Will Jones who joined Marine midway through the season, as well as bolstering their defensive options.

“We won’t need to do anything drastic in the summer, if we did then I would not have been doing my job right,” Goulding added.

“It is hard to know exactly what we’ll need this summer at this point.

“But if everyone sticks with us then there will be a minimal influx.

“It is even harder to fight off interest from clubs during the summer.

“But I have spoke to a lot of the lads and they can see that we are ambitious and building something here.”
