Burscough 2-2 Salford City
By Dave Humphreys.
Burscough v Salford City 30.10.12 - Evo-Stik First Division North.
Burscough will be disappointed to have not taken all three points as they came from behind twice to claim a point at home to Salford City.
A fast paced first half saw the home side go close as early as the second minute as Phil Clarke won a free kick on the edge of the box and was unlucky to see his strike blocked.
For all their early pace and possession, the Linnets fell behind in the 14th minute. Nathan McDonald did well down the right and swept in a teasing cross for Danny White to stab home.
Going one down kicked Burscough into life and Paul Williams could have equalised seven minutes later when he flashed a header wide from a corner. Jamil Adam had also been causing the City defence issues and did well to fire in a half volley that fizzed wide.
The Linnets grabbed a deserved equaliser on the stroke of half time as Louis Mayers curled home a fine free kick on the edge of the box, bouncing in off the far post.
Burscough came out of the blocks fastest in the second half as Mayers managed to squirm his way through two defenders but his shot went well over. Minutes later, four Linnets players dallied on the edge of the box but stout defending from the visitors made sure none of them got a shot away.
Somewhat against the run of play, City retook the lead on 52 minutes as Danny Heffernan glanced a header past Tim Horn at the near post.
As in the first half, going a goal down kicked Burscough back into life and it was non-stop pressure as they pushed for an equaliser. Jamil Adam made good use of the referee playing advantage and made space out on the left to just send a shot wide and then Mayers saw a free kick sting the palms of Branagan.
As it did on Saturday in the FA Trophy, Niall Cummins’ introduction caused havoc in the opposition defence and led to the Linnets equaliser in the 83rd minute. The big centre forward’s excellent header forced a corner and from the resulting ball in, Phil Clarke was poised on the edge of the box to loop a speculative shot over the keeper and into the back of the net.
An improved performance from the Linnets that deserved all three points.
