Burscough 4 Vs Winsford 0 Match Report By Neil Leatherbarrow
BURSCOUGH MOVING UP
Burscough have been doing well in cup competitions this season but not so well in their North-West Counties Premier Division fixtures, however having been knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday, they remedied their league form in some style on Tuesday evening at Victoria Park. Romping into a 4-0 half-time lead, before being able to take their foot off the gas in the second-half and ease to a victory that moves them up three places in the league table.
The Linnets made two changes to Saturday’s starting line-up at Warrington and both were highly influential on the night, Matty Ward picking up his usual number eleven shirt and centre-forward Chad Whyte being declared fit after his three week absence.
After a good start it took Burscough just nine minutes to grab the lead, Ward celebrating his return by taking advantage of some loose defensive play by Winsford then breaking from the halfway line and lifting the ball over former Skelmersdale goalkeeper Jack Cookson for the opener.
Two minutes later it was 2-0, keeper Cookson and his captain Lee Duckworth didn’t deal with a long ball and Terry Cummings who is a man at the top of his form recently finished with some comfort.
Burscough were now in complete control and should have had more goals before they made it 3-0 on 43 minutes, Ward getting his second with an effort that just crossed the line.
The Winsford defence were wilting under the Linnets pressure and in added time before the interval Whyte got his name on the score sheet to make it 4-0.
Burscough definitely eased back after the restart and Winsford had re-organised themselves, the result no more goals. Burscough were able to rest a couple of players with Saturday’s FA Vase game at Irlam in mind and Cummings among others was withdrawn early. On this devastating form they have a great chance of gaining revenge for a league defeat against Irlam last week,
