Bury Broncos won their second away game on the bounce as they triumphed over Wigan Bulldogs on Saturday.

The Broncos’ uncompromising defence led by some huge hits from the Radford brothers Adam and Chris saw them grind out a result on a humid afternoon against a physical Wigan outfit.

The bulldogs opened the scoring early on after a penalty for a high shot, but it was Bury who managed to cross the line for the first try of the game.

Bury took a while to get into the game but on 25 minutes Prop Forward Joe Connor timed his run expertly to crash onto a short ball and power his way over under the posts. Full-back Blake Roberts tagged on the extras to give the visitors a slender 4 point advantage.

Roberts extended the Broncos’ lead with a try of his own ten minutes later. The ball fell to Martin Wilcock on the last, the forward hoofed the ball in the air and the unpredictable swerve of the ball took it straight into the waiting arms of Roberts, who scampered over unopposed to give his side a 10 point advantage.

The Bulldogs managed to hit back on the stroke of half time, Bury were tiring in the heat and Wigan managed to squeeze through some sloppy tackles to bring themselves to within four points of the visitors at the break.

Bury came out refreshed in the second period and extended their lead after just two minutes. Wigan were expecting a kick on the last tackle, however Hooker Anthony Crumlish cleverly scooted over from dummy half to restore the Broncos 10 point advantage.

Wigan hit back just three minutes later, this time stretching Bury’s defence out wide to cross and reduce the gap to just 4 points.

The Broncos struggled to put the game to bed in the closing stages as they couldn't find the final pass to finish off some strong running from Centre Rick Brogan, who was proving a handfull down the Bulldogs right flank.

It was Connor who finally provided that spark Bury needed to close out the game. The Prop’s brutal handoffs saw him scatter the Wigan defenders on a storming 50 metre run. The Bulldogs’ full-back managed to chase back and bring him down 10 metres short.

However a quick play the ball was fed wide to Rick West who dived over from close range for his fourth try in as many games to wrap up the game. Roberts’ final kick of the afternoon sailed wide but there was no time for Wigan to mount a comeback as Bury continued their rise up the table.

They must now take this run of form into next weekend’s away fixture against high flying Woolston Rovers A.
