'Young Bucks' start their season campaign with a comfortable 4-1 home win.
For their very first Baris North Midands League game, Buxton FC U19s welcomed another new side to the league, FM Sport Dinnington. Buxton had a near full strength squad to choose from with the exemptions being Ballington (inj), French (inj) and Higginbottom (away). Long term absentee Owen returned from injury and Moloney made the trip down from York to link up with the squad.
The playing surface was in excellent condition on this clear floodlit evening and Buxton wasted no time in asserting their authority from the off. Clean, crisp passing and good movement saw the U19s dictate play as their opponents found it difficult to gain possession or venture out of their own half. These good early exchanges saw Buxton threaten the Dinnington rearguard on a few occasions and Swain was unlucky not to get a true connection with only 5 minutes played. Confidence grew throughout the starting eleven as the game progressed with Johnson and Hopkins linking well down the left. It did however take until the mid point of the first half for Buxton to get the advantage. Hopkins again found space on the left, his cross wasn't dealt with by the Dinnington keeper and Fletcher was on hand to head home from close range in the 23rd minute. It was nothing more than the 'Young Bucks' deserved and doubled their advantage with 34 minutes played when a good strike from Fletcher was saved low by the opposing keeper but quick thinking from Bradbury saw him lurking for the rebound and he gratefully put it away to make it 2-0. The second half got underway as it was apparent that the visitors needed to work alot harder to get back into the game. Buxton had noticeably slowed from their first half exploits and allowed Dinnington some time and space on occasions. In fact they got their first glimpse of the Buxton goal on 55 minutes but the centre half hooked his shot high over the bar and failed to trouble Stanway, who, had been a mere spectator for the majority of the game so far. Buxton once again stepped up their workrate and with 67 minutes played they put the game beyond doubt when excellent individual play from Heywood saw him rob his opponent in the centre and send a wonder strike from fully 25 yards over the flailing keeper and into the net. Chances were coming thick and fast for Buxton and should have been further in front with better finishing. Hall replaced the hardworking Fletcher on 74 minutes and a double substitution was made with 83 played when Owen replaced Moloney and Swain made way for Davies. With the game coming to an end, Hopkins' persistence and closing down earned him rewards when he robbed the visiting defender inside the box. The onrushing keeper could not keep his shot out as it squirmed through his grasp and into the net on 85 minutes. This looked like the end of the scoring in the game but to their credit, Dinnington, continued to the end and got the consolation in the 89th minute when a mazy run inside the box by their busy number 9 resulted in a pull back for them to fire home and spoil the Buxton clean sheet.
