Second XVs to play in 2017-18 North Wales league structure for first time.

At a meeting with North Wales clubs on Tuesday evening at Ruthin RFC, the WRU put forward their proposals for a restructure of the leagues in North Wales.

The proposal which was accepted with a large majority, which includes four 2nd Xvs, and will start in the 2017-18 season, is as follows:

Division One North – 12 clubs

Division Two North – 12 clubs – existing eight clubs plus top two at end of this season in Divisions 3 North East and 3 North West

Division Three North – 10 clubs – remaining three clubs from each of the current Divisions 3 North East and North West and top two clubs from both the Gwynedd and North East Counties leagues.

Promotion and relegation:

Bottom two in Division One at end of season to be replaced by top two in Division Two.
Bottom team in Division Two to be replaced by top team in Division 3.

A WRU spokesperson said: ‘After having meetings with clubs, and listening to their concerns, we came up with a couple of proposals for the clubs to consider, both of which included some second teams. We recognised the problems clubs were facing in Division 3 especially with regard to lack of fixtures and took the decision to include the top four second teams which will ensure a good number of fixtures and competitive games’.

The WRU Competition Management Committee will meet on 2nd May to formally approve the final proposal.

Once all league fixtures have completed on Saturday, May 13th, clubs will be placed in their respective divisions for next season and this will be approved by the WRU Community Sub Board on 16th May with fixtures being sent to clubs shortly after.
