Even Stevens Against Risca

A strong defensive show by the home side coupled with some poor handling from the visitors helped Caerphilly to an unlikely draw against a stronger and bigger side sitting 7th in the league.

A purple patch between the 20-30 minute mark helped Caerphilly gain vital points despite having gone behind to a penalty from outside half MATTHEW Biddescombe on 6 minute.

The penalty count in the first 20 minutes was around 10-1 in the visitors favour and despite Biddescombe converting early on he missed several easier attempts before the home side found their stride.

A break on 19 minutes from centre Damien Corns took play up to the half way line before spinning in the tackle and offloading to Will Worthington. Having found himself behind the Risca defence, the outside half sprinted to the line only to be cut inches short, the following attackers helping him over the line. Full back Vaughan Thomas adding the conversion to give the home side the lead.

A break from second row Gareth Rice, deep into his own territory allowed Corns to break again. Moving out left, only a forward pass as the attackers queued outside him stopped another Caerphilly try. Further breaks from Ollie Griffiths and Michael Lynch proved fruitless before the home side were awarded a penalty on 29 minutes, Thomas again converting.

Minutes later and the home side pulled further ahead as the visitors committed suicide in defence. Some good pressure forced Risca on the back foot deep into their own half. Failing to gather the ball, some indecision allowed Worthington to hack ahead before collecting the ball to cross uncontested. Thomas missed the simple opportunity of 2 points and Caerphilly led 15-3, which was carried through to the second half.

Risca came out strong in the second half, but again, poor handling let the side down before they eventually scored in the 66th minute. Under heavy pressure in the scrums, Caerphilly were forced to clear their lines and a weak clearance fell just outside the 22. Risca gathered and headed left for the line. Continuously looking dangerous on the break, the visitors switched direction, the ball eventually finding its way into the hands of prop Luke Martin, who span out of a tackle to score. Biddescombe added the conversion and the visitors were back in the game.

Caerphilly found themselves defending for most of the second half, and failed to capitalise on their chances as they had in the first half. Subsequently the visitors were still in the match when they eventually scored in the 6th minute of injury time, second row Anthony Symonds crossing as Caerphilly again failed to clear their lines.

Fortunately for the home side Biddiscombe missed the conversion for the result to remain at stalemate at the final whistle.
