Caithness Rugby Football Club was formed in September 1962 from a combination of Dounreay personnel and the local population. At this time rugby was also been played within the High schools in the county. Always a leading light in the north, the club, after a regular run of league and cup successes in the 70’s and 80’s, finally acquired national league status after winning the north district title in 1991/92. It was as a result of these successes that in 1990 the club formed its junior rugby section initially at the mini level before expanding with a U18 then a U16 team. Over the years the junior club has had varying periods of success, reaching the latter periods of the youth Caledonian competitions. The junior section have in recent times had some barren years and declining numbers which has been in contrast to the senior club, who following successive promotions, gained promotion to National League Division 2, where they remained for five seasons prior to the recent SRU league restructuring– ranking them in the top 50 or so teams in the country.
Caithness RFC is based at Millbank Park, Millbank, Thurso, and shares its location with Thurso swimming pool and fitness centre. The rugby club offers two playing pitches and a grassed training area.
The Rugby Club aims to offer rugby to members from five years of age through to adult teams, playing competitive and recreational rugby at all levels.
