Coaching Philosophy
As a club we are seeking to project and provide the junior players within the club and school structure of Caithness with a uniformed method of coaching. We hope that with the assistance of the current coaching body, our future coaching volunteers and this overview of the methodology of how we coach will provide the junior players the highest level of assistances and attainment.
We will be providing structured training sessions that will create a familiar routine and transition for our young players as they progress through the age grade system. Our focus will be to address the current deficiencies of individual skills of; hand/ catch, offload in contact, tackle and ball presentation. We will combine these individual skills focus with unit/ team work deficiencies in: scrum skills, lineout skills, team defensive skills, team offensive skills and tactical kicking skills as players reach the age grade level where these unit/ team skills are required.
Our coaching system will be player centred where we as coaches will set the purpose of the session (What game principles (Offence and defence) we are focused on , the key technical focus (Key National Themes) and provide a games based Whole-part-whole structure to allow players the maximum chance to achieve self-learning.
The philosophy behind the structure
Players learn best in a supportive environment, when presented with effective questioning that allows them to consider things differently and personalise their knowing and understanding. They learn best by being challenged in high intensity/ high focus game situations, where they are set specific goals from which they can regularly assess their status. As no situation in rugby is ever the same (due to the very nature of the game), therefore, constant practise of rugby specific situations in a game environment provide children with the classroom they require to become highly effective RUGBY players.
In this environment coaches can observe the learning status of a player by the change in behaviour and performance, how the player uses the knowledge and skills and adapts them to novel situations. The use of games is interactive for all involved and provides constant situations for decision making and problem solving.
By the coach using effective and positive questioning you allow the players to personalise the learning, test their options and seek multiple solutions and enhance their learning towards EXPERTISE. Questions also encourage interaction and involvement of the whole squad and can be used to lead them to the key principles and factors initial set out by you at the beginning of the session. In this way we can check that the players have understood and learnt the objectives.
As the Club Development Officer will be my role to assist all the coaching staff in adapting to and developing this coaching method for their growth and development as well as the players they influence.
