The Community

The club has a well established Community Schools coaching policy which was started in 2001. This was developed from our already successful youth and mini section and the principal that the future of any club should be based upon the development of a strong, internally generated youth policy which would be fundamental to the future stability of the club. Last season we, with the support of Sports match, undertook a three year programme to increase the profile of rugby in local primary schools and emerging secondary schools. We also set up two girls teams at under 15 and under 18 and, in conjunction with the local Schools sports coordinator, set up a programme to go into three local girls schools to develop the game.
Our coaching programme included 12 primary schools and three festivals at the club organised and run by our community coaches. All the coaching in the schools was completed by our community coaches funded by the club and Sports match. We also organised and ran three rugby camps in October, March and August for the benefit of the local community.
Caldy has always been at the forefront of the development of community coaching on the Wirral and we are always looking to improve ways to raise the level of participation on the whole of the Wirral. We believe that our success has already lead to an growth of players throughout the clubs on the Wirral and not just Caldy.
This year we intend to improve this programme again with the support of Sports match in the second year of the three year programme. We have already identified 28 schools where we would assist with the coaching (see attached list) and a programme is being set up by our Director of Rugby and at least 4 Community coaches. This initiative is very ambitious and we see it further developing the game for the benefit of all the clubs and not just Caldy who are already reaching capacity of their facilities and grounds.
The club is proud of its Youth development programme and has been at the forefront of the RFU seal of Approval programme being 5th to achieve year 1, 1st to achieve year 2 and 15th to achieve year 3. We have just submitted our application for Whole club seal of Approval together with our 10 year plan. Hopefully this will be approved in the next month. We have also been awarded the RFU presidents XV Award for our submission “More than a club” which laid out our vision of a “one club ethos” which we feel is the way forward.
We have always considered that investing in the future is best way a club can ensure stability as the development of the youth creates within them an identity and affinity to their primary club which never leaves them. The success of our community policy has resulted in a significant increase in Mini and Youth membership. We had approximately 500 members under 19 including 73 in our under 7’s last year. Such is the size of our Youth section the club is now actively seeking ways to increase the size of our playing areas.
The key objectives are:-

1.To raise the profile of Rugby in the area
2.To provide access to a physical activity for all.
3.To increase the numbers participating in Rugby.
4.To provide a broad base in the sport this will lead to increased numbers at senior level.
5.To provide the right level of coaching to enable the level of skills to improve.
6.To provide players who with the skills to benefit rugby at a national level.
