Caldy 55 Lymm 15
Caldy took to the field on Saturday with a strong side full of expectation. They needed a win, they needed to score points to ensure the championship and they needed 37 points to break the club’s all time points scoring record.
It didn’t feel quite right when Lymm opened the scoring! It was certain that they had come with every intention of ruining our party. The first twenty minutes proved an extremely hard fought encounter. We lost young Dave Jones with an early injury and then Graeme Birch had to leave the field with a back injury closely followed by Tom Sanders. The team did find their rhythm and started scoring to finish at half time with a slim lead. We turned round with a strong wind behind us and started playing a more exciting style of rugby, although this was always hampered by Lymm’s young side who kept spoiling play. In the end we scored 9 tries including a brace from Doyle (along with 5 conversions) and Macca’s 31st try of the season.
The league victory was ours along with the club record and we now face a final game in what has been a fantastic season against Sale FC 2nd team. Sale are having an unbelievable season having only conceded 78 points and winning every game.
Moment of the match – the fantastic break that was reminiscent of Serevi’s Fijian sevens side. Byrne hurled a panic pass from the back of a maul that Ingleson flicked to Greensmith who chucked the ball between his legs to Sutherst who steamed 50m before being cruelly pulled down 5 yards from the line.
Player of the season – Paul MacDonald – fantastic try scoring and a limited amount of acceptable defence!
