Hope Valley 13 -v- Caldy 20

Back to the top for Caldy

Whilst checking the studs at 2.50 on Easter Monday in the picturesque Hope Valley, the referee stressed the importance of making sure that if any player’s face was actually submerged at the bottom of a ruck, getting his head above water was a priority!! It’s a long time since I have played in such conditions and the result was a complete mudbath and a battle that was won by determination rather than skill. The slim victory was not what Caldy 3rd XV wanted but was enough to elevate us back to the top of the league with two games left to play.
As there is very little to write about the rugby I will use the next paragraphs to get some details clarified:-

To the Hope Valley player who declared after the final whistle that everything was ok because ‘that annoying little scrum half wasn’t playing’ – this is not funny anymore! It was funny when the referee said it before the Chester clash but it is now an old joke – please come up with some new ones!

To Dave Ingleson (with the hairdresser’s car) when you toss a few blades of grass in the air to establish why your kick missed touch it will not help – it was just a very bad kick!

To Bev Sanders, John Bailey senior is in deed the father of John Bailey junior but is not in anyway related to me (Jon Bagley (neither senior nor junior))

Now that those issues are cleared up, Caldy playing down the considerable hill in the first half were able to score three tries for no return. The rain continued to fall and there were so few options the game proceeded with a succession of driving plays with the ball only changing hands when Caldy gave away penalties. We were dominant in the set piece but failed to really capitalise. In the second half Hope kicked two penalties and scored the best try of the game when their fly off kicked through and showed excellent footballing skills to get the ball over the line. Caldy’s return was a single penalty but this proved enough.

Man of the Match – In his last game before leaving for Dubai Tom Hatfield controlled the game well and deserves the man of the match award.

Moment of the match was undoubtedly the sight of the fantastic showers.
