Wirral 12 -v- Caldy 45

Caldy 3’s promoted but still chasing league champions title

On a Saturday afternoon, when most of Merseyside had either gone to Wembley or Aintree, Caldy struggled to raise a side for their 3rd team game against local rivals Wirral. We just managed to get numbers up to 15 ten minutes before the kick off.

The game started terribly for Caldy as Wirral cut straight through our defence in the opening minutes to score an easy try. We knew we had to turn things around but our play in the first ten minutes remained flat and we didn’t look like the side of the previous few weeks. As has been the case in so many previous weeks a few individuals shone and eventually it was enough to take the rest of the team with them. This week it was Jaimie Manson and Charlie Sutherst who took the responsibility on their young shoulders and led the way with hard driving runs and brave defence. Caldy managed to struggle to a ten point first half lead.

When they turned round for the second half the confidence grew with a strong wind behind the team and the scores started to come thick and fast from all quarters of the park. Paul MacDonald managed another hatrick taking his personal scoring tally up to 30 in the season, and Max Doyle’s goal kicking was excellent.

Although Caldy finished the scoring on 45 points they could be justified in feeling unlucky with two tries disallowed on a very close forward pass call and a difficult foot in touch decision.

Caldy’s lead over Warrington at the top of the table has been reduced slightly to 32 points with only one game to play, next week, against Lymm.

Man of the Match – Jamie Manson had declared himself unavailable because of an injury in training but changed his mind when he realised we were short of players. He then played a superb game and thoroughly deserves the Man of the Match award.

Moment of the Match was the site of Andy White dressed head to toe in Lycra stood on the side line.
