Caldy v Warrington

We had a glorious Spring morning to welcome two very good teams from Warrington. With a dry ground, conditions were ideal for some running rugby but unfortunately, for a second Sunday in a row, it was the visitors who played the better rugby and came away with the wins. Warrington kept their shape well through several phases in both defence and attack, whereas Caldy were sucked in to the breakdowns in defence, and in attack never seemed to look to get any width: I counted the number of passes before contact on one finger, and it was dismaying to see our runners going backwards and sideways looking for gaps that never appeared. Caldy's best runs were the direct ones, straight forward and with strong body positions. We saw quite a few of those, but we didn't capitalise on them: what we need to do is get the ball back quickly and pass it out to runners in space; what we saw far too often was the scrum-half or first receiver taking the ball back into the well-defended areas. Warrington defended very well and didn't let us get away with poor decisions; what we also saw far too often was the ball-carrier taking the ball into contact ball-first instead of shoulder-first - we lost the ball far too often that way, and far too often we saw Caldy players standing back from their tackled team-mates asking for a pass while the Warrington players simply got on and stole the ball. We need to work on these things at the mid-week training sessions. One positive from these matches was that the mauls were very good. Stars of the week were Edward C., Adam Dur., and Louis C.
