GRIFFITHS AT THE DOUBLE TO SEND CTLFC TOP

Callington travelled to Bude knowing that a win would lift them to the top of the table with Plymouth Argyle Development's game being postponed.

We were a bit frustrated with ourselves in our overall performance as a team, but sometimes when you don’t play well, you have to still grind out a win.
- CTLFC Manager, Adam McPherson

Things could have been more comfortable had it not been for some rusty and tired finishing from the away side, but credit must also go to Bude who were well-organised and hardworking throughout.

Town could have opened the scoring on 5 minutes when Eleri Griffiths saw her low strike brilliantly saved by keeper Jodie Webb. What transpired was a scrappy period of play on a heavy and bumpy pitch. Town dominated the possession but were struggling to test Webb again with any real dangerous shots. On 35 minutes came a moment of quality which had been lacking. Griffiths picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and rifled a fierce shot into the top corner, this time leaving Webb with no chance.

Callington introduced 3 first half subs to inject some more energy into proceedings. One of which was Stacey Derrick who’s just returned to the club. Her impact could have been significant had the referee judged a trip on her in the Bude box as a penalty, but instead the protests were waved away as play continued.

The second half started much brighter for the away side and they began to string some neat passes together. Just five minutes after the restart Griffiths added her second following some neat football between Lucy Bounsall and Chloe Williams. The young striker’s shot went in off the post giving her 11 goals in 8 games.

Town continued to huff and puff but the bright start began to fade as clearly a month without a game began to take its toll on a worsening pitch. Bude grew back into the game and carried a threat with Sarah Badham up front. On the hour the home side had a long-range looping effort which dropped narrowly over the goal. With 20 minutes remaining, Bude got themselves back into the game. A free kick 40 yards from goal was lofted towards the area and the ball skimmed off Callington’s Tyler Matthews’ head before wrong-footing Sara Rowe and dropping into the corner of the net. The goal came against the overall run of play but gave the home side a lift and made the remaining 20 minutes somewhat more nervy for the visitors. Town saw out the game to claim all 3 points and lift themselves above Argyle on goal difference.

After the game Town manager Adam McPherson said: “We were a bit frustrated with ourselves in our overall performance as a team, but sometimes when you don’t play well, you have to still grind out a win. You could see the lack of match practice in our play at times, but Bude also made it tough for us so fair play to them.”

Player of the match was awarded to right back Siobhan Ellyatt for what’s now become a customary solid display from the young defender.
