Callington served up the result and performance of their season so far with this demolition of Plympton at Torbridge School 3G.

We asked a few of the girls to play out of position and do a job for the team and the response was amazing.

The result somewhat atoned for last season’s Bristol Soccerworld Cup exit to the same opposition at the Semi-Final stage.

Town played attractive football throughout, despite missing no fewer than five regular players with injury and illness. Two of those were regular central midfield pairing of Jodie Shipton and Peyton Ringham. However, Gemma Farley played in a deep holding role, with Amy Hemingway and Stacey Derrick alongside her. The combination worked wonders with Kate Nicholls also a constant presence up front with her work-rate and energy. Nicholls almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes but her close range header was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the Plympton keeper. The keeper then saved well from a Kate Bourn strike moments later.

Despite Callington dominating possession, it was Plympton who took the lead when their midfielder was given space to shoot high into the net from 30 yards. Town were soon back on top with Emily Sweet and Eleri Griffiths down the right hand side linking up well. After 20 minutes Town were level. A fierce strike from Bourn was once again saved well but Nicholls was sharp enough to prod home the re-bound from a couple of yards out.

Callington then doubled their lead when Griffiths crossed from the right and Nicholls scored another poachers’ goal from inside the six-yard-box. Town took their deserved lead into the break after defending superbly and giving Plympton no clear sight of goal after conceding the opener.

Callington introduced substitute Kat Marment at half-time as they looked to capitalise on their level of possession. Despite this positive change, they were pegged back once again just after half-time. A cross came into the box and Marie Wilson’s clearance came back off her own post and fell at the feet of a Plympton forward who finished from close range.

Town then got themselves back in front following an excellent cross into the box by Nicholls and Stacey Derrick was on hand to head home from 12 yards out. The goal gave Callington even more confidence and they looked like adding to their tally. Soon enough they did, as Farley lobbed an exquisite pass through to Marment and the striker buried it into the far corner to make the score 4-2.

With ten minutes on the clock Griffiths was moved into her more natural central position up front and within seconds she teed-up Farley who fired in from just short of 30 yards. Griffiths capped off a mature display when she grabbed herself a goal and Town’s sixth shortly before the end. The young striker caught both centre backs napping on the ball and then raced clear, before clinically firing into the bottom corner.

Town manager Adam Mcpherson said after the game: “We asked a few of the girls to play out of position and do a job for the team and the response was amazing. Their work-rate was matched by the composed football they played from beginning to end. It hurt to get knocked out last season so close to the final so I think it was still in their minds throughout the ninety minutes.”

Player of the match was awarded to Kate Nicholls who led the line up front to brilliant effect. Notable mention also went to Town’s back four who restricted Plympton’s strikers to very few openings.
