Callington are through to the county cup Semi-Final thanks to a resounding win over St Agnes.

We try to get the ball down and play on the ground whenever possible so the surface helped us to do that...
- Adam McPherson, CTLFC Manager

The game was played on a 3G pitch as the grass pitches were out at Callington. The home side are used to training on the surface and it showed in the early stages as they dominated from the start.

Callington should have been a couple of goals to the good but the St Agnes keeper pulled off a number of brilliant saves to deny both Amy Hemingway and Stacey Derrick who were both in on goal inside the opening five minutes. Promising young striker Eleri Griffiths was also getting close to breaking the dead-lock and she curled a great effort just wide of the top corner after 10 minutes. Callington continued to spread the ball from one side of the pitch to the other in order to break down a stubborn St Agnes defence but the visitors managed to stand firm for half an hour, before Stacey Derrick converted a Sam Veal corner from inside the box.

The opening goal seemed to settle the hosts and shortly after they doubled their lead. It was another corner that caused the problems for St Agnes, but this time it was taken by Gemma Farley and was headed home by Jodie Shipton. Before half-time, Shipton showed her areal abilities once again as she this time powerfully headed in a Sam Veal corner.

The second half saw some more positive pressure from a St Agnes perspective and they were rewarded five minutes after the re-start when they managed to fire in a high shot in from 30 yards to bring them back into the game. The come-back was short-lived though as Farley played in Griffiths and the forward buried her shot into the far corner as she raced down on the goal. Griffiths then returned the favour for Farley as she teed up the midfielder for an excellent low drive into the bottom corner. With the game effectively sealed, Callington begun to carve out more openings, with Kate Nicholls denied a goal on three occasions by the keeper.

The score was 6-1 when another dangerous Farley corner was whipped into the box and this time Siobhan Ellyatt reacted quickest to volley home for her first competitive goal for the club. The young midfielder was clearly delighted after making her return to action after four months out with injury.

Nicholls rounded off the scoring in the dying stages when she hooked the ball in from close range at the back-post.

After the game Town manager Adam McPherson said: “We try to get the ball down and play on the ground whenever possible so the surface helped us to do that, and the girls did have some really neat passages of play throughout the game. At times we can be more clinical but we got the job done in the end and we look forward to seeing if we can make the Final.”

Callington’s player of the match was awarded to Natalie Owen who put in a solid display at the back and showed composure to start off a number of Callington attacks.

The Semi-Final will be played against St Teath this coming Sunday should the weather relent. The other Semi-Final sees a matchup between Mousehole and Newquay Celtic.
