Camborne 2nd XI v St.Newlyn East 1st XI
Cruising Camborne humbled by Div 3 Newcomers. (Journalist: Lewis Taylor)
After winning the first four games of the season Camborne 2’s lose at St. Newlyn East. It was a lengthy drive to reach the ground (- 4 minutes if you were lucky enough to ride in The Paco express). There was not a cloud in the sky, however the wind was blowing a hoolie (Scottish – Translation = VERY WINDY). We had to park in the village and take a 2 day hike to the ground, after our search for parking led us to a sign which read ‘Flora Day overflow car park’. Detective Hocking quickly pointed out that this was 2 weeks ago…and in HELSTON! It was obviously mind games.
All 11 lads managed to squeeze in to the porta-loo sized changing room, and waited for Bicks to come back from the toss, which he won (he is really good at that) and much to our delight we were batting. Martin Woolcock and the talented Simon Hosking opened the batting. We lost Woolcock (6) early on after disappointingly being caught at mid-wicket off a half tracker. Richard Moore (Bicks) came in at 3 and decided to copy Woolcock ending in the same result, the bowler was laughing (not physically) after picking up 2 in form batsmen with absolute tripe deliveries…as they say very poor bowling takes wickets (child friendly). Classy Jordan Harvey in at 4, who looked good for his 13 but then played all around a straight one and given LBW, bowled by their pick of the bowlers and over-sea’s player Shivakumar Mruthunjaya ended with figures of 12-36-6. Meanwhile at the other end Hosking was racing along getting to 47 in no time, including 3 sumptuous straight 6’s…however he lost his patience and decided to give a lucky fielder some catching practise. Darren Pascoe (Paco) was building patiently, Detective Hocking came in and out given LBW which looked plum from 3rd man where the boys were sunning their chiselled abs. It was now down to Paco who was joined by Aaron ‘The future/Barrel/Arujuna Futcher. This pair batted sublimely dominated by Paco who made a powerful 91 (losing the match ball in the process), supported capably by Futcher who ended on 32*. Nigel Endean and I (Lewis Taylor) decided we didn’t want to bat, so he chipped one to mid-off and I ran myself out after coming back for 2 which was hit at their best fielder. Matty Weston came in with an over to go and tried to cut a Yorker on middle…he was bowled. So that was that, a great recovery from 60-4 to 224 all out. A good total.
Their opening pair varied in the amount of talent they possessed, however they both passed 50, with Lady Luck holding Hiltons hand. It took us about 469 overs to get a wicket but we did, with Hosking getting the break-through with his dibbly dobbly’s. In came their no.3 who was ran out first ball after Barrel Futcher pulled off an unbelievable one handed stop. No. 4 was their Indian Shiv, who batted very ‘Sub-Continent’ hitting in to out and creaming it to all parts he ended on 56* and their opener (Former Redruth CC player) Ted Allsop ended on 93* after a chanceless knock. St. Newlyn east reached the target in the 44th over with 8 wickets in hand. (I personally refute the rumour that my return to the side led to our defeat). Beaten by the better team…looking forward to getting back to winning ways next week boys!
