Away form 'Towns' Achilles Heel

My last Chairman’s Chat was Nov 18th !! Time to communicate my “thoughts” again in the “New Year”.

Firstly, the fact that the 1st team have lost 8 league matches to date is disappointing and certainly something that was not on our agenda for the season!
Seven of those defeats have been away from home and without doubt our away form has been our ‘Achilles heel’. However close analysis shows that all these defeats have been by fine margins! In those defeats we have scored 113 points and conceded 157 which, means we have lost those games by an average of 6 points per match!!
When reflecting on some of those defeats and the scoring opportunities that were not taken and decisions that went against us it becomes very frustrating. But in order to meet our ambition we have to overcome the distances involved in traveling on a Saturday (the ‘geography’ of where we are will never alter!) and be more consistent with player availability. In short we have to learn ‘how to win away’ and address what needs to be done to improve away results.

Despite our 2nd team playing quite regularly, with away wins at Wadebridge and Penryn recently being notable successes, there is cause for concern with several Cornish clubs (and nationally) about the future advancement and the way forward with 2nd team rugby.
Discussions are ongoing! Watch this space for developments!!

Our mini/junior section is continuing to progress admirably, thanks to the hard work of Dave MacDonald and all his coaches and helpers. A couple of Sundays ago we hosted our local rivals Redruth in all age groups and it was great to see so
many (about 300 youngsters) from our towns playing and enjoying rugby and being enthusiastically supported by parents, grandparents and family members.
The future of rugby in our club and in the ‘mining’ area is in good hands.
Our colts are having a fine season and the style of rugby being played is enjoyable to watch. Their defeat of Redruth colts, in Redruth, recently was a tremendous advert for colt’s rugby. Well done lads.

The ladies (WAGS) section goes from strength to strength with numbers training on Monday evenings steadily increasing. The enthusiasm of Kevin Oates, in getting this new section up and running is infectious and the coaches involved are doing a fine job in motivating and introducing rugby to the girls. Well done everyone.

As I write the refurbishment of our ‘Town Bar’ at the clubhouse is about to commence. The work will take about 2/3 wee
ks and when complete will give us, and the whole of the Camborne community, a splendid, modern venue capable of hosting a variety of functions.
This is very exciting for us as I mentioned in my previous ‘chat’. A reminder that any contributions to our “RAISING THE BAR” fund would be gratefully received; additionally please support any event that the club hosts for this fund and also our match raffles, the proceeds of which will go directly to this fund.
