Chippenham 20 - 17 Camborne
Town unlucky not to pick up win at leaders
Camborne pushed the unbeaten League leaders all the way and can count themselves a little unlucky to have only a losing bonus point to show for their long trip to Wiltshire.
Giving one of their best away displays for many years the Cherry & Whites put the home side under huge pressure at the death but could not find the vital winning score.
Forced into a number of changes ‘Town’ gave a debut to 17 year old wing Alex Ducker with Dan Arthur switching to full back and fit again Cameron Bone on the other flank.
Soon trailing to an early penalty the visitors hit back when Ashley Hosking (below) intercepted and raced over for an unconverted try wide out.
Camborne were to have the edge upfront throughout with hooker Ben Priddey (above) going on to take no less than five strikes against the head.
After an evenly contested scoreless period, on the half hour a turnover allowed the home backs to attack from long range bringing a try for centre John Squire converted by fly half Richard Taylor for a 10-5 scoreline.
As the interval neared Chippenham made a rare visit to the Camborne 22 and came away with a converted catch and drive try for a flattering 12 point advantage.
In the opening exchanges of the 2nd half despite trailing 17-5 the visitors continued to take the game to the home side but crucially slipped further behind with a 2nd Taylor penalty success.
Inside the final quarter a rampant ‘Town’ deservedly reduced the deficit when Priddey touched down his 6th try of the season from a forward surge for 20-10.
Now playing some excellent rugby with Chippenham clearly rattled Camborne moved to within touching distance with minutes remaining. Fly half Hosking again intercepted 40 metres out and duly ran in unopposed to touch down near the posts and fire over the conversion.
The Cherry & Whites must now look to carry this form into a vital home match against Cullompton this weekend.
