Reserves score late to secure fourth straight home win
89th minute strike from Kenny helps Reserves to 2 - 1 victory over Ashdon Villa
This week it was our fourth consecutive home game, on a sunny but cooler spring day, facing an Ashdon Villa side who were struggling of late and had slipped to 12th in the Senior B table. We were optimistic of extending our winning run at home to 4 matches, and making up for our 2 – 2 draw in the reverse fixture. The only concern was the availability of players with it being Easter weekend meaning many weren’t around, although we were still able to field a strong line-up and bench…
Team: Cam R, Csaba, Kenny, Ryan, Jun, Baz ©, Josh, Jack, Doni, Rob, Scott
Subs: Mike, Beattie, Guy, Macca
Both teams started the game with the aim of gaining early advantage, without creating a clear-cut opportunity. Rob and Scott were linking up well in attack while the defence snuffed a couple good moments of play from the visitors. Cam made a great save from a well struck effort midway through the half; the main moment for him in this match.
We took the lead a few minutes later, Rob beating their keeper (who had been taking a sip of water instead of reacting to a quickly-taken throw) at the near post with a low drilled shot. A couple of dubious offsides thwarted good attempts to extend our lead, before Ashdon Villa equalised not long before half time with their striker heading home at the back post after getting a yard away from his marker.
It was a pleasing first half display, just a tad frustrating to be level at the break.
We came out with vigour at the second half striving to re-take a lead that we could keep until the final whistle. Some good moments of play didn’t quite result in a clear opening for us as a mix of solid defending and loose final balls prevented this, as well as an eagerness from their linesman to flag an offside.
Guy, who was introduced for Doni late in the first half, continued to impress down the right by defending solidly with Csaba as required and breaking away in attack to cause problems to our opponents. Beattie came on in centre midfield and made an impact adding bite and aerial presence that was so needed towards the latter stages, while Macca took over from Josh and Mike was an able replacement for Jack.
Entering the final 10 minutes, Kenny came close to scoring twice heading narrowly wide from corners, while Rob was booked for dissent after showing his frustration when caught by their keeper for a second time with no decision given. It looked the game would end all square as we approached the final minute. However, Rob picked up the ball on the right, after a second clearance following a freekick, and put a cross into the danger area that Kenny volleyed into the bottom corner on the turn to the despair of our opponents.
This was the last moment as soon after the re-start, the final whistle was blown. It was another decent performance playing against an opponent who liked to move the ball across the pitch; the game did have an end of season feel though with neither team going all out to win. A fourth home victory in a row consolidates 10th place in the Senior B table and moves us only 1 point behind 8th - which must now be our target. This also sets us up nicely for next Saturday’s game at current league leaders Haverhill Borough Reserves…
