Reserves battle to draw with Wisbech St Mary Reserves
Reserves draw 1 - 1 to Wisbech, extending the unbeaten run at home to 6
We returned to the Cass this week, for our fifth game at home in the last 6, looking to put in a strong performance against a solid Wisbech St Mary Reserves who sit 4th in the Senior B table. We lost 4 - 1 in the reverse fixture so a chance to make amendments as we move to the end of the season. We were optimistic of extending our unbeaten run at home to 6 matches. We had one of our strongest squads of 16 even with a few regulars - Baz, Csaba, Jonny, Kenny and Luca - unavailable…
Team: Damian, Ryan, Dan, Beattie ©, Rickie, Jun, Josh, Callum, Sefa, Rob, Martin
Subs: Cam R, Wayne, Jack, Cam B, Scott
Wisbech were the quickest from the start, creating a couple of decent chances early on that were thwarted by our switched on defence. We didn't take long to get into the game with some good play ourselves, one of which saw us take the lead through Rob. Rob latched onto a ball over the top, beat his man in a 50/50 then slotted home with left foot across the keeper. 1 - 0.
Our opponents clearly had a threat out wide and a tidy centre of midfield, but we didn't allow them too many opportunities to really utilise these. When they got balls in the box or over top, these were defended well with the midfield working hard to support at both ends of the pitch. The biggest challenge for both teams was the inconsistent refereeing and sometimes baffling decisions being made.
Limited chances were created by either team throughout the rest of the first half. The main moment of note was Damian suffering an injury to his ribs not quite midway through the half, seeing Cam R coming on to replace him in goal. A solid half and well-earned 1 - 0 lead.
After the break it was clear Wisbech wanted to level the scores as soon as possible and continued with playing some really good football. We struggled a little to keep hold of the ball and alleviate the pressure we were under. Nearly 15 minutes into the half, they equalised as a lapse in concentration allowed their winger to finish unmarked at the back post.
Soon after a couple of changes were made, Wayne came on at CB for Ryan while Jack replaced Rickie and went into LM with Callum moving to the right. We continued our solid defensively display and managed to put the visitors on the back foot a bit more. Jun was our first player into the book after showing his frustration at the referee for not doing anything about a Wisbech midfielder's aggression, then Callum joined him a bit later following a tackle on the edge of the box.
Cam B entered the game just after for Rob and then Scott joined the attack replacing Martin, who moved into CM with Jun coming off after another battling performance. A few more rolling substitutions were made and these were the only moments of note. Cam R did very well in goal when called into action, saving us when Wisbech had a good late opportunity to win it.
In the end a 1 - 1 draw was a fair result in a game contested by two good Senior B sides. Both teams felt they could have snatched victory. The biggest frustration though was the woeful refereeing that made the match very stop-start and didn't allow many flowing moves. This well-earned point extends our unbeaten run of form at home and means 10th is very likely to be the position we finish. Next week we face Bluntisham in our final game looked to end the season on a high before the Player of the Year Do...
