Continuing to improve on the fine form exhibited at the Home Nations Tournament two weeks ago in Worksop where the Cymru Red Dragons beat the Scotland Clansmen and lost to the England Dragonslayers by 6 points, the Cymru Red Dragons showed true Welsh passion at the EuroCup at the Queens University Sports Ground in Belfast today (08/10/11).
No doubt inspired by the success of the Welsh Football and Rugby teams earlier this weekend, the Red Dragons were keen to also demonstrate the Welsh sporting ability.
The day started with them in Pool D with home nation rivals England and the Iceland Ravens. Their first match kicked off at 10:30. With them facing the old rivals England. The result did not go Wales' way, losing 29 - 9. The Red Dragons remained undaunted, however, and later beat the Iceland Ravens a confidence-boosting 48 - 22.
The Cymru Red Dragons finished the pool stages in a reasonable 7th place, taking them out of contention for the EuroCup itself, but into the Semi Final for the EuroCup Plate.
The Semi Final was against the unknown EuroCup debutees the Russia Czars, who had demonstrated surprising form for a new team. The Red Dragons extra expreience prevailed and they beat Russia by a very convincing 47 - 10.
The Spain Bulls, who met the Red Dragons at last years EuroCup in Milan, met them in the final. Both teams battled fiercely for the plate with the Cymru Red Dragons continuing their roll to win by an undoubtable 46 - 6.
Today yet another Welsh national team celebrates after a well-deserved victory.
Cymru am Byth!
