LES MCJANNET - AN APPRECIATION

As announced last night on the official site last night, Carlton Town manager Les McJannet confirmed yesterday that he is leaving Stoke Lane.

McJannet, who has been in charge of the Millers for five years, told chairman Mick Garton of his intention to leave the club at the end of the season and he informed the players of that after yesterday's 1-0 defeat against Romulus.

This year has been a major disappointment for all at Carlton, not least McJannet himself, but as I noted in the programme for the Romulus game, it is sometimes necessary to step back and look at the problems afflicting clubs of our size at this level, (for example Brigg and Rainworth to name but two), to really appreciate what McJannet has achieved since coming to Carlton.

He arrived in the summer of 2010 to find that virtually the entire first team squad and the whole of the academy set-up had followed Tommy Brookbanks to Hucknall Town. Those players that didn't go to Hucknall went elsewhere and McJannet and his assistant Mark Clarke had to recruit an entire first team squad from scratch.

He not only did that, but he did it so well that we lost only one of his first 16 games, made it to the final of the Notts Senior Cup for the first time in our history and finished comfortably in the top half of the table.

The following year we finished second in the league, our highest ever position, and scored 101 goals.

There then followed back to back Senior Cup wins and record breaking runs in the FA Cup and Evo-Stik League cup including a memorable win against FC United of Manchester last year.

In short, McJannet has massively over-achieved and, like Brookbanks before him, it will be a daunting task for the manager who takes over from him next season to follow in those footsteps.

He's one of the nicest blokes you could wish to meet and we are extremely grateful for his efforts at our club.

Les - we salute you and wish you all the very best at your next club, wherever that may be.
