Carlton Town entertain Stourbridge for a first-ever meeting between the clubs in the FA Trophy First Round Qualifying on Saturday.

The Glassboys, as Stourbridge are known, have a long and generally successful history, going back to their formation in 1876 as Stourbridge Standard.

Success in various leagues around Birmingham followed over the years until they joined the Southern League in 1971.

They alternated between the Premier and First Divisions of that league until relegation to the Midland Alliance came in 2000.

However, six years later they were back in the Southern League and two years after that they were back in the Premier Division.

They have remained at Step 3 ever since and reached the play-offs in the Southern League in each of the last two seasons, going out at the semi-final stage both times. As a result of a lateral transfer in the summer, they find themselves playing their football in the Northern Premier League this year for the first time in their history.

Not only has their league form been impressive in recent years, but they have caused a stir or two in the cups, particularly the FA Cup.

They have made it into the FA Cup First Round proper three times, with a memorable win over Plymouth Argyle live on ESPN in 2011-12 perhaps being the highlight. That win put them into the Second Round proper where they lost against Stevenage, and they repeated the feat last season where amazingly they were drawn to play Stevenage again (this time away from home) with the same outcome - a Stevenage win.

They are currently ninth in the NPL Premier Division following a midweek win away at Nantwich Town and well-placed for another tilt at the play-offs.

As for Carlton, Les McJannet should have Martin Ball and Jarrod Holmes available again after missing the midweek trip to Goole. The position with Josh Rae and Anton Robinson is less clear, although Lee Torr is making progress in his return from injury.

After the early exit from the FA Cup, an FA Trophy run would no doubt please the Chairman, but Carlton's record in this competition is abysmal with one appearance in the Second Qualifying round the best they have achieved.

So Les's team have the chance to equal that record on Saturday, and they will take some heart from their victories last season in cup competitions against Stourbridge's fellow Premier Division sides Buxton, Matlock, Stamford and FC United.

Get yourselves down to Stoke Lane to cheer on the Millers. If you can't make it, there will be regular updates on @CarltonFans twitter.
