A Sam McVicar hatrick helped Carlton Town to a 6-3 win over Rainworth Miners Welfare in the Notts Senior Cup.

The win sees the Millers into the semi-final for a second successive year but it wasn’t as straightforward as the scoreline may suggest.

Les McJannet made three changes to the side which drew with New Mills on Saturday. Goalkeeper Grant Vann replaced Andrew Richmond as expected, and Anthony Griffith Junior and Anton Foster replaced Reuben Wiggins-Thomas and Joe Naylor respectively.

Rainworth for their part lined up with former Carlton players Ali Barcherini, Curtis Shaw and Ryan Goward in their starting eleven.

Carlton opened the scoring on 10 minutes when McVicar reacted quickest to a Matt Millns header to prod the ball over the line.

Rainworth came back and it took a double goalline clearance from Ashley Kitchen and Rob Darkin on 25 minutes to maintain the lead.

Foster then played a clever free kick to Griffith Junior, who slipped past two defenders before rifling in a powerful strike from 20 yards which brought an excellent save from Barcherini.

Rainworth came more into the game and levelled three minutes before half time when captain Steve Kennedy rose to head home a Ryan Goward corner.

The Millers began the second half well and McVicar hit a delightful chip over Barcherini which came back off the crossbar. He wasn’t to be denied however and on 57 minutes he scored his second when controlling a Daniel Fletcher cross before swivelling and firing past the Rainworth keeper from close range.

Barcherini then saved well from Millns as Carlton threatened to kill the game off, but Rainworth came back to level again on 65 minutes. Vann made a superb save from Cameron Fearon but from the resulting corner he misjudged the flight of the ball and Romaine Graham stabbed home.

Within a minute McVicar had his hatrick after Barcherini couldn’t hold a Griffith Junior shot and the former Loughborough man was on hand to convert the loose ball.

Griffith Junior then crossed to Millns whose header hit the bar. The ball fell to McVicar whose shot on the stretch flew over the top.

Rainworth went in search of a third equaliser and Kitchen had to clear off the line again after Vann had saved the initial chance, but with just nine minutes to go it was 3-3. Rainworth broke down their right, Vann came for the ball before stopping. A deep cross found Ben Spargo who finished coolly with Vann desperately trying to recover his ground.

However, Carlton reacted by going straight down the pitch and from an Adam Kimberley free kick captain Kennedy headed past his own goalkeeper to make it 4-3.

Kennedy’s night got even worse when, with Carlton attacking, he took a swipe at substitute Reuben Wiggins-Thomas not only off the ball but in the penalty area. The referee saw the incident, immediately issued a red card and of course a penalty, which Wiggins-Thomas converted.

With time running out, substitute Joe Naylor played the ball across field for Wiggins-Thomas, who cut inside and unselfishly crossed to fellow substitute Ian Brown who finished at the far post.

The Millers will find out their semi-final opponents shortly, with the remaining quarter final due to be played next week.
