A brace from Ian Brown and an early strike by Theo Smith saw Carlton Town safely through the preliminary round of the FA Cup against Borrowash Victoria.

Thanks to SIMON HARRIS for this report.

The Millers started quickly with a chance on two minutes, Ian Brown having a chance that was well saved by Vics keeper Smith only for Theo Smith to follow up and slot the ball into the net.

Carlton continued to run the game with large periods of creative football with Borrowash unable to make any serious impact.

There was a chance on 18 minutes for Ryan Goward as he tried to chip the Vics keeper from 40 yards only to see his effort finish just wide of the target.

On 21 minutes Carlton doubled their lead with Ian Brown getting on the end of a great through ball from Curtis Shaw to fire home.

The only chance of any real note for Borrowash in the first half fell to prolific goal scorer Marc Finlay, the ball was floated into the Millers box and Finlay was left with a free header only to miss the target.

As the first half concluded a further chance fell to Nick Hall as he weaved his way through the defence and midfield of Borrowash only to run out of steam as he entered the box.

Borrowash had used the interval to regroup because the second half brought a more direct formation and direct play. Nevertheless, the match carried on in same way as the first half with some great passing down the right hand side by the Millers, who illustrated the two levels of football that separate the teams.

On 55 minutes Wilson the Borrowash manager talked himself into being sent off following a warning in the first period. As a result he was forced to watch the rest of the game from behind the perimeter barriers.

On 61 minutes Ian Brown added his second and the Millers third goal when he nodded home a Nick Hall header from five yards. The Borrowash defence and keeper Smith looked at each other with nobody sure what had happened.

On 69 minutes Vics number 9 Finlay capitalised on a mix up between Marshall and his back four and fired home into an open net to give the home side some hope of a comeback.

However, there were to be no more goals and Vics number 2 Green was sent for an early shower for a second bookable offence after a tangle with Nick Hall. The Millers will now entertain the Vics’ fellow East Midlands Counties League side Heanor Town in the First Qualifying round on September 17.
