First XI close in on safety
Alec Davies (38) and Derek Johnson (3-27) help secure crucial win over rivals Marchwiel & Wrexham
Carmel's First XI beat relegation rivals Marchwiel & Wrexham by 50 runs as they took a giant step toward securing safety in NWCL Division One.
The hosts won the toss at Marchwiel Hall and asked Carmel to bat first, only to see Alec Davies (38) and Dylan Campbell (36) put on 73 for the first wicket.
That gave Carmel the platform to push for sizable total as Danny Owens (33) and Oliver Saynor (33) both played confidently.
At 155-4 Barry Mcgauty's side had one eye on a score in excess of 200 only for a middle-order collapse to follow, while the visitors' tail fail to wag.
With three ducks as the last six wickets went down for 20 runs Carmel were dismissed for 175 in 43.2 overs.
Aussie paceman Campbell (1-29) gave Carmel a dream start after the tea interval as he struck with no runs on the board.
Fellow opening bowler Saynor (1-28) also removed one of the home side's openers before Derek Johnson's swing saw him claim 3-27 from his 12 overs to finish the pick of the attack.
Jack Whitehouse (2-18) bagged two crucial wickets before Mcgauty (2-8) mopped up the Marchwiel tail as they were bowled out for 125 in 37.4 overs.
