Quay locked out by Mcgauty and Hulbert
Quarter-final tie with Northop beckons after cup upset
Carmel's Midweek XI claimed a shock victory over Connah's Quay in the Flintshire Knockout trophy.
The hosts posted a competitive 159 from their 20 overs after they won the toss and elected to bat.
Club skipper Barry Mcgauty proved to be Carmel's talisman with the ball as he bagged a hat-trick to finish with 4-34.
Finn Hulbert (2-14) and Alec Davies (1-34) were the other bowlers among the wickets for the visitors.
Third XI players Connor Traynor and Cameron Ackroyd also held their own in the field against the NWCL Premier Division side.
Carmel openers Davies (26) and Hulbert then made a blistering start to the run chase as they put on 59 for the first wicket in just six overs.
Gwion Dafydd and Harry Thompson both departed for ducks but supported Hulbert as he cracked a quickfire half-century.
Hulbert showed a wide range of strokes before he eventually departed for a 42-ball 81 with Carmel on the brink of an upset.
And Matt Nash (29*) and Gareth Roberts (8*) ensured there were no hiccups as Carmel eased home with 20 balls to spare.
Carmel's reward for the shock is a home tie with Northop in the quarter-finals of the competition.
