Tie at Buckley denies 1st XI promotion
Tense final match sees Carmel just short
Carmel's 1st XI were left crestfallen after a tie against Buckley meant they missed out promotion from NWCL Division Two.
The result left Carmel level on 155 points with Ruthin, but their rivals were promoted having a better average points per game.
Carmel's average was 9.688 but with Ruthin having had one match cancelled their average was marginally better at 9.929.
Buckley won the toss and posted 134-8 after they elected to bat at Lane End in a match reduced to 25 overs a side because of the weather.
Mike Rapson returned from injury to finish the pick of the Carmel attack as he claimed 3-25.
Oliver Saynor (1-26), Ben Sim (1-19), Derek Johnson (1-23) and Danny Owens (1-7) were also in the wickets.
Additionally, Saynor showed his sharpness in the field to claim a run out as Buckley finished on 134-8.
Danny Owens (25) got Carmel's response with the bat off to a positive start but the rest of the top order fluffed their lines.
At 79-8 the cause looked forlorn but Michael Harrison and Rapson (33*) led the fightback.
With two runs required off the final ball for victory Harrison (23) scrambled a first but was then run out to leave the scores level.
