NORTH LANCASHIRE TWO
Carnforths first home encounter of 2012 saw them record a 5 point bonus victory to move back into third place in the league, still well adrift of the top 2 Mossley Hill and Manchester Medics. In the previous game Eagle gave Carnforth a good hiding and they travelled from Warrington looking to claim a double. However without their captain and playmaker Jay Jackson their squad is not as strong. Missing props darren winning and Lee Moorhouse through work, Adam Seaton once again came up from the second team with usual flanker dan blenkharn packing down at the end end of the front row.
The visitors made the early running with Mike Bridge and flanker Connick in the thick of the action. However Carnforth settled down and after a superb break by Blenkharn from his own 22 the ball moved along the backs, Gavin Barton, Mathew Short, joe harrison and nick hamer all involved before winger Phil Metcalfe was able to fly down the flank to score. Moments later and Metcalfe turned provider, a good break saw him stopped short to allow Barton to pick up and dive over , Short converting.
On 22 minutes Short made a superb break from stand off and his efforts more than deserved a try but excellent defence kept him out before the supporting Blenkharn picked up and drove over for a try, Short adding the extras. Eagle refused to lie down and their play warranted points. They got their reward when the fly half showed his skills and experience to shimmy his way through before scoring a superb solo try, 2 added and game back on again.
With the half time beeper approaching Carnforth were able to to score 17 points in the last 5 minutes of the half. Hooker David Hones had a superb afternoon and his support play was excellent during the game. He scored a well taken try on 35 minutes, Short added a penalty a couple of minutes later before Hones grabbed his second try. The second try was again started by Short who again cut the defence before offloading to Hones who split the gap to power away for a try, conversion added and a half time score of 36 – 7.
Carnforth made their replacements during the second half, John Edmondson, graham rich, brian albiston, Kevin Hardy and josh wilson all getting on the field. The game became static for the opening exchanges of the half with neither attack able to break the defence. Back row shaun tomlinson, Greg Sykes and Jason Short all had great games with Short making numerous breaks to set up play. On 55 minutes Carnforth got back over the line when Barton and Blenkharn linked up to allow second row lee launders to score his first try for the club, a popular score, Short converted.
Eagle are a team who refuse to surrender and back they came with a well worked try of their own, the winger sprinting away for a score.
With 10 minutes to go Carnforth were looking for the half century of points and this came when their seemed no danger when Blenkharn took the ball on half way, however a superb break saw the prop forward surge upfield to power away and register his 19th try of the season, Short adding the two extra before also slotting a penalty.
But the final word went to Eagle as they grabbed a third try on the stroke of full time to leave the final score of 53 – 19 to Carnforth. The next game is away at Colne and Nelson followed by a players meeting in the clubhouse on 28th January.
