The amateurs expected a tough game ahead when they travelled to Limavady last Saturday to take on Newtowne in the semi final of the McReynolds Cup.
The current runaway BPIL league leaders came out at a high tempo against the Ballymena lads who found themselves under pressure right from the start. Newtowne were playing some neat football from front to back but couldn’t seem to break Carniny down despite their possession. As the half progressed Carniny got into the game more but the scores remained level at the break.
Newtwone came out fast in the second half and opened the scoring on 55 mins when a ball through the Carniny defence found a Newtowne forward who slotted home. Only three minutes later they scored again when McNeilly forced a save on to the cross bar only to see the rebound collected by Newtowne and fired home. They went on to score again 2 mins later when the same forward was fed a ball over the top of the defence. Despite looking like the game was now out of reach, Carniny to their credit continued to fight on and despite being down to ten men through injury they managed to pull back a consolation goal through Ryan Wilkinson, but that was all they took from the game with Newtowne progressing into the final.
