The History Of Carrum Netball Club
Early 1960’s - present
Early History
In the early 1960’s a group of parents from the Carrum Life Saving Club formed a netball team that became the beginning of the Carrum Netball Club. The Club grew in strength and size over the years with teams competing in all levels of competition with the Dandenong and District Netball Association. During this time the Senior A Grade team had the distinction of winning the A Grade Grand Final for an unprecedented 25 years.
Despite its standing as one of the largest and strongest clubs with D.& D.N.A., throughout this time the club was run by a small group of senior members (originally Marg Sanderson and Dorothy Green, followed by Beryl Tardrew and Glenys Hook) and had no formal committee structure. Because of this, there is little in the way of records to document the club’s past history and much of it relies on the recollections of those remaining members who were associated with the club at this time. Many of these relate to playing at the stockyards in Dandenong prior to moving to the new facilities at Greaves Reserve.
From its beginnings at the Life Saving Club where facilities for training were somewhat limited, the Club moved on to Bonbeach P.S. and later to Carrum P.S. Many of the players came from these feeder schools but they were also drawn from a wider area due to the strong connection to Richmond Ramblers.
Sadly in 1992, many of the Senior players decided it was time to retire, including those who had previously run the club. At a meeting held to determine the future of the club, it was decided that there was sufficient interest from remaining players to rebuild and move on.
As the player base was now very much centred on Carrum, the decision was made to keep the name. All uniforms and equipment had been passed on, so, despite some pressure to change, it was decided to stay with the traditional red on red. It was also decided that as the Club was being “reborn”, it was a good time to change to a competition that was a little more accessible for the players. A committee was formed and the decision was made to enter teams in the Frankston & District Association.
