Epic Semi Final ends in heartbreak for 10-man Colts
A game to remember.
Casty failed in their bid to reach the League Cup Final, but gave everything in a scintillating game with chances going begging at regular intervals, Colts down to 10 men from early second half, and Rhostyllen sealing an excellent game at the end of extra time.
Old Casty faces Josh Jones, Dean the Bastard, Steve Jones, Dan Brown, Drew Wickens and Lewis Clamp were all back to their old hunting ground, whilst Colts were boosted by the inclusion of David Bullough. Josh Price continued in a CF role.
It was a lively start with home keeper Jack Gibbons in fine form, turning an effort around the post, but both sides were going hell for leather and it was after 12 minutes that Colts took the lead. Phil Davies dangerous free kick was flicked home by Joe Henry. Colts
continued to look dangerous and were unlucky on a few occasions, Arthur, Dan Shaw and Josh all going close with decent efforts. But
it was the same the other end as Gibbo was dealing with everything coming his way.
So half time arrived and we were feeling confident. But the visitors came out lively second half, and this led to the turning point of the game on 53 minutes. Gibbo made a fantastic stop and from the rebound Titch was adjudged to have handled and Ref. Luke Alsop awarded a penalty and gave Titch a Red Card, despite our protests it had hit his chest(as the mudmark clearly showed).
The penalty was converted, and from another visiting attack only 5 minutes later the game was turned on its head as Niall Rooney
swept home. Casty now had to dig deep, and kept themselves in the game, they were rewarded on 73 minutes as keeper Josh Jones
fumbled a cross and JOSH PRICE was on hand to fire home an equaliser. Both teams went for a winner, Dan Shaw hitting the post,
and on 84 nminutes Colts missing the chance of the game as Phil Davies found himself on the end of a deep cross, and with basically an open net, he somehow sidefooted side with the goal gaping. One or two scares the other end and we reached 90 minutes level at
Both teams were very quick on the break, and Rhostyllen got their noses in front on 98 minutes after a raid down the left, cross to the far post, Jack made a fantastic stop but the ball rebounded kindly and was fired home for 3-2. Right on the whistle to signal the end of first half extra time, Niall Rooney scored a gem of a goal firing an angled shot into the top corner for 4-2. But Colts were not done yet, and sub Owen Williams made it 4-3 hitting home at the near post after good work by Bulla. Then in the last minute of extra time, Davies broke clear down the left, crossed low and there was an almighty scramble with Rhostyllen defenders on the floor, Owen just could not free up the ball to tap home, eventually it was hammered downfield, Rhostyllen sub Drew Wickens ran on and sealed the game low into the corner to end the game at 5-3.
What a fantastic game for the neutral, a classic in every manner, Castell Alun gave everything they could with 10 men, but luck was just not on our side on the day. Congratulations to Rhostyllen who made a huge contribution to this open game, and we wish them all the best as they go on to the Cup Final where they take on Lex Glyndwr.
Plenty of MoM contenders today, Jack Gibbons was superb, but taking the honours is JOSH PRICE for a quality Centre Forward
We move on to Wednesday night and a quick chance of revenge as we visit Rhostyllen in a League game. (ko 6.15pm)
